One is a half dollar and the other is a nickel. It says one of them is not a nickel but the other one is!!

Since just ONE of them is not a nickel, that means one of the 2 coins can still be a nickel. The other coin would be the Half dollar.

nickel + half dollar = 55 cents.

must be 3 coins - 2 quarters and a nickel (one of them isn't a nickel - it's a quarter)
