it's a CVV (those are v's, rather than a w) number for short for Card Verification Value.
just as was answered, it's additional security to prevent unauthorized activity on a credit/credit-check card.
so if someone simply knew the card number, hopefully the merchant would also need to verify that cvv number if it was a "card not present" transaction occurring over the internet, by mail, or over the phone.

It's a security feature to combat fraud. On most cards, it's on the back of the card in the signature box after the card number.
