I left my last job because being the bookkeeper I noticed things were not being handled correctly so I go to our company controller. I asked him to come look at the books. He calls my supervisor and they start telling me I had no business saying anything, I was just an inputter & So on. Now I knew p/r was overpaying herself and other things I had to say something. Now in my department there were 3 of us, payroll and a/p, me the bookkeeper and my supervisor. Needless to say I wasn't welcome there anymore. Well state of California denied my unemployment claim saying I should have let the owner work it out. So I need two things 1 your opion weather I did the write thing and and can anyone help me with Petition for Wri of Mandate. I have to go to the Superior court to try one more time to see if any one agrees with me. I feel I did the right thing. Did I?

My job title was bookkeeper, and just a month before I was asked why I didn't have the financials done. My responce to my supervisor was "they are not accurate and I would not put my name on them, at this point. So I was more than just an inputter until she wanted me to be.
On another note THANK YOU TO EVERYONE FOR YOUR RESPONCES.

I used to do A/P for 3 different companies. At all 3 there was somebody with their fingers in the cookie jar.

In the beginning, I was mortified. I went to my supervisor. I reported what I found. At each company nothing was ever done. At one company I was asked who had made me the gatekeeper. At another I was told that other people had asked questions and they did not work there anymore. I learned not to make waves.

I was miserable working for these places, and eventually left each one of them. I am now a business owner myself.

To answer your question, yes you did the right thing. You have a conscious. The controller should have intervened.

Good luck with your case.

I think you did the right thing. When people apply for jobs, the companies want to know they are hiring honest people who have some sort of business ethics. Unfortunately, it could be possible that the people you went to had something to do with what was wrong. Ever think about that? How could you know.

I think you did the right thing, but welcome to the world of a wistleblower! Been there my self... I suggest you get a new line of work cuz bad news travels fast and that will follow you in your financial world.

On the other hand you were just an inputter and not a balancer or an accountatnt...

But I love the gutts of a whistleblower.... overall, i think you did the right thing...

1. You should have went to your supervisor first...not someone in another department.
2. you shouldn't have quit until you had another job.

You have no right to say anything about the companies books to people that aren't involved (ie. others in your department)

So, you got yourself in trouble.... quit your job.... now want a "paid vacation" courtesy of State of California and your previous employer.

Maybe I'm missing something, but you shot yourself in the foot when you blabbered to your department and went around your supervisor.

BTW... what does the President/CEO say about what you found? I think that's who I'd try and contact.
