depends on what state you live in, there are some states that the plates go with the cars and where i live the plate stays with the owners, you need to check with the Secretary of State and see what the rules are governing your state

personalized plates are yours keep them. Laws vary state by state most the time leave the old plates on and hope the new owner transfers the title and for your records keep a copy of the bill of sale. Other than that say good bye to that old friend, Nemesis, oil burner, gashog, bucket of bolts,

In California, you only keep the plates if they are the personalized plate that you pay extra for, you know, the ones that have your name or your little message on them. If they are the standard issue type they go WITH the car.

NO, man why do ppl answer questions they know nothing about. i buy and sell used cars for a living, the plates must stay on. there is no reason to keep them, you can't use them again, and the new owner will get new plates with his registration, but you have 21+ days to register your car, until then it is legal to use the old plates, but illegal to drive without them.

Can be removed if the buyer want to change theirs. Can keep it if they want to have the same plate number. I keep mine when I sold my Toyota highlander.

Yes, unless you would like to take the chance on the buyer doing something wrong, and the police tracking YOU down.
