Most downloaded movies can be burned straight to DVD or VCD. If you can play and view the movies, chances are the burner programs can encode it to DVD or VCD.
However, if you cannot play or view the movies, meaning, you get error message pertaining to codec error or you can only hear the sound, most likely you don't have the codecs.
Most avi file that you downloaded are DivX so you might as well download divx player and codecs from divx.com.
Another software you need is G-Spot, it is a small program where you can check the movie files to see what kind of codecs are missing or installed. You get it here gspot.headbands.com.
If your burner program give you an codec error message, check your movie files with G-Spot. Look on the top right area of G-Spot under Codec, Name, Stat. It will tell you the outcome. Then you search for the codec online.
Hope this helps.

First you need to find out what is the format of your downloaded movies. The format for dvd movies are mp2. Next you need to get a conversion software that can convert it from the format you have now to the mp2. On yahoo.com, type on the search bar, for example, "mp4 to mp2 conversion software." It will give you a list of site. Afterward you successfully convert it to the dvd format, you can now use your dvd burner to write it to a dvd cd.

You would need a DVD writing software, like NERO or AnyDVD in order to convert them into the right format so that a DVD/CD player would be able to to play them back.
