Because the stomach needs the energy to digest more effectively. That energy comes from the oxygen-carrying blood. Since all attention is diverted to the stomach, the brain gets less oxygen and we feel tired. So I hate it when we have to have afternoon lessons in school.

Lots of things going on. Blood going to your digestive system. Tryptophan in that chicken relaxing you. Maybe a dip in blood sugar if your body doesn't handle that too well. It can even be caused by food sensitivities or allergies. (And you can be sensitive - or even allergic - to something you eat all the time.)

after having meal the blood flows more to the splanchnic region (the blood vessels of the bowel) than to the other part of the body, including the brain.
that's why we feel a bit sleepy after having a big meal.

That happens to me all the time too. It's really annoying especially when I am at work and can't lay down and I need to be alert.

Your blood volume shifts to your stomach to digest, so your brain has less blood. Blood carries oxygen. Oxygen keeps us alert.
