Depends who you're writing to. Basically, you begin with a Dear so-and-so, then introduce who you are and why you're writing. You don't have to necessarily ask for a reply unless you're writing a formal one. If you're just making friends, then use a friendly tone like 'hi', or just 'thanks'. I think you don't have to write it too long. Most people don't have the tendency to look at long letters from a stranger.

I start all my email with: Dear and then their name. I do it the same as I would with a letter. I am older so maybe it is just harder for me to find a change.....Thomas S.
