The Merkava tanks are said to be designed as the most survivable tanks in the world, yet 4 were lost to these portable shoulder fired rockets or guided missles in the wide open spaces of Lebanon. Is this just another example of marketing and militarized P.R. tactics to help create an Illusion of Israeli Invincibility, you think?

To LIGLE, Why the hostility? You have stock interests in Israeli Defence Industries. I am not creating fantasy, this is a truth that should be known, you troll.

There are three issues.

1) The anti tank missiles being used by the Hezbollah are of the very latest technology and as they are being supplied by Iran and Syria they are likely to be a mixture of Russian and French.

2) The Israeli tank commaders would probably not have been expecting anything more than the usual shoulder fired rockets (as carried by every well dressed guerilla fighter globally) which to be honest probably wouldnt even scratch the paint on a Merkava.

3) Hezbollah are actually a very well trained group and are led by Iranian special forces officers and so far their military prowess has been better than anything the Israelis have seen before from the Egyptions, Syrians, Jordanians, and others.

Given the losses in the last few days (12 tanks) I think you will see a change in tactics to address the issue.

Everyone knows the best tank on the market is the Leopard 2 A6. The Israelis are incompetent and their army is designe to fight Egypt in a conventional war. A dude pops out of a house behind the merkava with some semtex and the tank is done.

The anit-tank missiles that are being used are a new type of missile. They have only been on the market for a short time. All tanks are vulnerable anti-tank missiles including the American Abrabms. There is a soft spot somewhere on them all. Plus, the Israel tank crews are used to militants just popping up, shooting a RPG and running. This time Israel is getting attacked by something more advanced.

maybe they'll survive 1 hit...but I doubt anything can survive past 2 or 3 hits by any rockets. The first blast will probably thin out the armor....the second blast rips it apart

Most "SURVIVABLE" doesn't mean indestructible. And surplus doesn't mean that won't work. The only sense that I can make of your question is that doesn't make sense.
