I think thats a great idea. It requires a school years worth of hard work and effort. And its something fun that you can do TOGETHER. Not just a video game or something that will just peek his interest.
Great Idea MOM! ! !

I think it's great to reward a job well done. . .and also give him something to look forward to and work hard. But I would spell out exactly what he has to do to earn that and chart his progress throughout the year. Otherwise, the goal is too far away and to obscure to really mold his behavior. Maybe doing well in school means getting a B average. Or maybe it means working hard on a project or trying something new each quarter. Maybe it means improving his listening skills and getting good conduct grades and points for participation on his progress reports. Goals don't mean a lot if they aren't measurable and you don't know how to get there. I guess all I'm saying is. . .spell out what he needs to do to earn that trip and the lesson will be much more meaningful to him--especially since the school year is so long! What a great incentive for him to do well.

It's great to reward kids for a job well done. He deserves something special if he's getting good grades. Our daughter got strait 100's on her spelling tests last year and we rewarded her for that at the end of the year. She also got a reward for her attendance. Most kids find it easy to miss school and such. She also gets small things throughout the school year as she deserves them for certain things done. Kids should ALWAYS know when they're doing something right and that it's appreciated. It makes them just want to try that much harder and keep doing it. It enforces good habits. Even in life as you get older, you're rewarded for doing a job well. Don't change what you're doing. You should be praised as well for encouraging your son like that.
Keep up the good work with your son!!

I think it's a great idea. This is not bribery, it's positive reinforcement. Children want attention, and many will do bad things just so that someone will pay attention to them. When parents reward GOOD behavior, they instill a sense of pride in their children, and they begin to develop a HABIT of good behavior. You might want to reward each report card with something small, ice cream, or a pizza, with the trip as the overall reward at the end of the school year. You're doing a good job as a parent.

I think your son should be able to get good grades without the knowledge of a reward, but at the end of the year, if he does get a good report card, you could surprise him and go to 6 Flags! Getting him stuck on a reward system will be difficult to get off of when he's older; that's why I suggest getting him to be motivated without a prize. Besides, most kids love surprises!

Well you can do it for maybe this year. But if you do it every year and one year you decide not to do it then he will be mad. Just try to make him think that education is key. I'm twelve and I got th highest ISAT test scores in the school. But I didn't get rewarded. I just got the education I needed. Try to make him understand that if he is good everyyear then his award will be something bigger than Six Flags. He may even be president.

I think it is a wonderful thing to give your kids a goal to work for, even if the work is school. You wouldn't do so great at work if you didn't get a pay check right. It's not a bribe, it's a reward for a job well done.

IMHO - You should reward his grades every semester!! And alot of places will give discounts or prizes for good grades. Take his report card wherever you take him and show the managment how great your son did in school and they will also reward him! Exxample: Chuckie Cheeses gives free tokens to students with good grades!

Positive reinforcement is a good idea for a job well done! You are wise to reward him, that's what happens for us at work. We work all week and our positive reinforcement is -we get paid. If we didn't get paid we wouldn't work and like wise if we did a bad job we would be fired. So it's no different for children. Positive reinforcement/reward will go a long way.
