I talked to a vet about this very thing once. Dogs digestive systems work very fast and thus the poo actually still contains some of the flavor of the food the dog ate. So for the dogs it still tastes good. Odd I know, but that is what I was told.

We had the same problem and someone told me to try the anti-poo pills....no luck.

What really works is buying very good food and switching on them. It is a very common myth that you should only feed your dog one kind of food. When you do that they will always have too much of one thing in their system and not enough of another. No dog food however expensive has everything they need.

We went to the natural dog food store and bought 10 bags of different quality, good foods. Now I feed them something different all the time. I cannot believe the difference. We have a 12 year old dog that has eaten poo all her life and we had to watch her like a hawk to make her be good. Now she doesn't want it. My 15 yr. old baby that was very sick and threw up all the time feels good and is so energetic now. We have a 1 year old pup that nothing worked on and he would fight to eat it when we fed them science diet. He doesn't even sniff it now!

I promise this works. Some brands I got are that Dick Van Pattons dog food, wellness, canide(sp?) just to name a few.

Try it, it works I promise. We have tried for years to stop this.

Does your dog get much time with other dogs? If I remember correctly, stuff like this comes from dogs who need to be better socialized with other dogs. Try taking him to a local dog park so he can make friends. Being around other dogs, that DON'T do this, will also teach your dog that eating poo isn't normal dog behavior.

An animal eating another animal's poo is a sign that its nutritional needs are not being met by its diet. An animal eating its own poo would be a sign that it is having a digestive problem and nutrients are being lost in the poo.

My vet told me my puppy ate her own poo because my puppy was so young, that her digestive system pretty much doesn't break down her food all the way. So her poops still smells like her food as a result. My vet told me to just make sure to give her a puppy treat when she poops, and make sure she avoids her waste. So by doing so he'll learn to avoid it. I tried it with my pup, and it worked...

Every dog I've ever owned liked to eat cat poo...guess my Dane prefers that over my cooking.
