Think about it this way....Single action = trigger will only do one thing, drop the hammer. Double action = trigger will do two things, draw hammer back then drop it.

Single Action Pistol - You must pull back the hammer then pull the trigger in order fire.
Double Action Pistol - You just pull the trigger to fire.

A single action does one action at a time.you pull the hammer back before you pull the trigger.A double action you pull the trigger and the hammer goes back by the movement of the trigger.

I am no expert. I know these terms only concerning revolvers. With a double action revolver, pulling the trigger moves the faucet and releases it. With single action you have to move the faucet back with a finger or the other hand, and pulling the trigger releases the faucet, and the shot of course.

Single action, you must pull back the hammer for each shot.....double action, the hammer is operated by the trigger pull.

these guy's are correct.have you noticed in the old cowboy movie's they use there hand on top of gun cocking it for fast shooting? Ruger makes blackhawk-"single action" super redhawk-"dbl. action". .44 mag's
