"breaks" u mean the hardware broke, fell off something?
every reaction is prompted by an action i think. Its either there was an earth tremor, the rats in the house pushed on it, there has to be a reason.
if u didnt do it, do u feel guilty that u did it. then its only pychological.
u feel responsible for the house things when ur mate isn't around that's natural. dont feel blame if u didn't do it. u could call him b/f he gets back, so he's prepared beforehand as to what has happened.

hmmm well who or what could have possibly broke it? If you did indeed accidently break it...do the right thing and get it fixed. If you had guests over and one of them broke it...its your responsibility. Point being...your housemate wasnt there to break it. and Unless you had a quake, flood, hurricane, typhoon, or sudden ice age in your flat its on you. Besides..honesty is the best answer.

1) how do you know it is broken?
2) If you didn't touch it then somebody elkse did and if you knew they did without trying to stop them ....?
3) If he isn't back yet and you know it is broken I'd say you are NOT telling the whole story.
If he claims it was broken after returning and you didn't know before maybe he screwed it up when he first got back himself or somebody else did and that is what he gets for not securing it will gone.

nope because you didn't do anything. But at the same time yes because your housemate might say to you why didn't you keep and eye on it but you can just say that you had too much to do so i guess it's not your fault.

Did you sign a contract? If not, you're probably okay. If you told your roommate, "I guarantee your laptop will work when you get back" then he may have you on an oral agreement. I'd say drag it out in court as long as you can.

Your housemate needs to learn to lock up his things when he goes away...
