What is it inside of us that determines beauty. How does the mind know even at a very young age what is beautiful to look at?

I have children and they have all amazed me at times relating to something that is beautiful, sun sets, beautiful nature scenes the first time they see them and beautiful people, in spirit as well as in looks. It has alway puzzeled me as to how they knew, what was what, without being taught?

I believe that beauty is something that when we look at it, it seems to be right with nature, right with the world. I've noticed that all things natural, even the dusty plains of west texas, have their own unique beauty. Just like a symmetrical face is more beautiful than a face lacking symmetry. This is because one half of the face should look like the other in order to achieve a balance, nature is naturally balanced like that. You don't see the face of a tiger lacking symmetry. As far as what inside us determines it... if I'm looking at it from a religious stand-point... I think perhaps it is the soul. Perhaps the soul sees the beauty of the earth, recognizes who made it, and feels the joy and elation that comes with feeling a connection to it's maker.

Really good question! At a young age, we know instinctively what is pleasurable and what is not. With age, we succumb to the thoughts/reflections of others on beauty. At the risk of sounding cliche, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. What or who I find beautiful (physical or physiological) may not appeal to you because over time, you have set your own standards for what you find beautiful. As with most things in life, it's relative to the person and situation.

I don't think it has to do with the mind so much, as it has to do with our higher consciousness. When we are born we are raw, sensitive, open slates of warm consciousness. The principle of consciousness is harmony of opposites, which some people call beauty. In other words, we are constituted with a sense for harmony as our foundation.
This sense of harmony is what can explain why growing up in an extremely abusive family, can feel right, because all our reactions to the "input" we got, when growing up, we tried to harmonize, by acting in ways that would balance or reinstate harmony in our relationships in our family (mom-me-dad). One might say that the governing principle for "the growing" of human beings is harmony through the balancing of opposites, resulting in beauty (at the ripe old age 60 :).

At last - an intelligent question!! The nearest description I can give is a feeling of joy/happiness when you see something beautiful. I think of the stunning sunsets I've seen, really great paintings, and, of course, women who are not necessarily beautiful, but they have this undefinable aura that stops you in your tracks. Thank you for a great question and God Bless!

Its not a knowing it is chemical. It goes through your eyes and touches your heart. You are attracted to things that appeal to your very nature. Some can be explained, others can't be summed up in words. Acceptance and admiration can also be a choice as well. This is why we say "she grew on me," for example.

symetrical things.
I read once about babies that give an approval look in their face when being presented a photo of a symetric face.
and disapproval look when looking at an asymetric face.
All babies like Denzel washington's photo and he has a symetric face.
