Well, considering that I have a family friend who is a blue-eyed Swede AND a Muslim, you can't tell by looking at someone's appearance.
Profiling based upon physical appearance is both ineffective and just plain DUMB. You can't identify a person's religious affiliation by appearance alone any more than you can tell if they are a terrorist. And the vast majority of both Arabs and Muslims have nothing to do with terrorism and are as abhorred by it as everyone else.
A smart terrorist is going to go to great lengths to hide their religious and racial affiliation in an attempt to bypass simple racial profiling. And they are usually very successful in this. And don't forget that there are blue-eyed blondes in the Middle East as well, some of whom are educated in the West and would be indistinguishable from the general population based on visual or vocal cues. If one of THEM is a terrorist, you're f*cked!
A trained observer ignores physical characteristcs and watches peoples' behaviour. All but the most dedicated and highly trained terrorist is going to throw certain behavioural signs that they are up to something and a property trained observer will pick up on these cues without regard to simple physical appearance.
If Timothy McVeigh were still walking around among us, he'd pass through security without a second look if authorities were trying to guess peoples' intent by what clothes they were wearing or the color of their skin. And we all know what THAT bastard did!
And what of the IRA and UDL terrorists? Hmmm...??

While to the layman it may appear there are certain discrepancies and idiocies in the screening of people at the airport, I am sure since the terroristic actions of a few, the authorities have scaled up their tactics for identifying them. If I were a screener though, even if it wasn't mandated, I would definitely be scrutinizing the Arabs more closely than the rest of the passengers. Right or wrong, it would be my natural inclination, along with following the officially mandated practices of how to screen everyone. And EVERYONE should be screened.
This is an unfortunate side effect of having mainly Arabic terrorist organizations bent on the destruction of American and British citizens. It is an old adage, but true, "Better safe than sorry." Appearing bigoted would be the least concern for me. The safety of all the passengers would be the first.

After reading the answers to your question, they are all pretty much right on..In todays world, the word Terrorist is pretty much defined as some one against the NORM. So if you look at all the other groups that have been "watched" over the years, there is no clear cut "Terrorist". Until now. But then again, we have all sorts of people converting to Muslim. No race, color or creed is separated. It just seems that most of the radicals come from the Arab countries..If you believe in something and don't care to die for it, then we are in big trouble...

No its not ridiculous for them to screen everyone! What makes you think that ALL of them are Muslims? It is just because of their skin color or that they could possibly be from the middle east. I would rather have everyone screened so there isn't any discrimination. How would you like it if they "screeners" just stopped all blue eyed Scots? You would moan and groan about that one. The way to prevent discrimination, it NOT to pick a certain type of person, but to pick ALL...

Yes, they must apply objective criteria to locate and search the terrorist:
1) Is he/she a muslim?
2) Is he/she Arab?
3) Is he/she Pelestinian?
4) Is he/she Iranian?
5) Is he she Kashmiri?
If any reply is "yes" than he/she is a terrorist and must be killed immediately in the self defense of "western Civilization"

Yes, esp in the US, if an airport or other security people did not check everyone there would be 100's of law suits about profiling and discrimination.
So often they will go out of thier way to be sure they check more of the other type of people than they really want to check to show they are not profiling that one type.
( sorta a reverse profilie in my opinion)

I live not far from the town where Timothy McVeigh grew up.
Who would have looked into his Irish blue eyes, and thought - "Terrorist!"
