Electronic components refer to the devices you would find inside electronic items such as your phone, television, computer, etc and are mounted on a printed circuit board (pcb). They consist of resistors, diodes, capacitors, integrated circuits (chips or IC's),transistors, coils, transformers, LED's (light emitting diodes), etc.

Well yes components consist of transistor, diodes, resistors, capacitors, inductors, coils, transformers, ics... yata yata.
But i believe you said define so here we go....
I guess lets start from how do electronics work how do you get sound just by pluging in a picture just by conectting some cables, or dc from ac.
First lets just start with an old radio this is the easiest to brek down and give a complete view of what each part does.
DINED:
resistor- a limiting device used to lower voltage or current in circuit
cap- a filtering device can be used to store energy like a battery that is filtered off a circuit or can be used to remove a frequency not needed or desired.
Diode- forces current to flow in one direction.
transistors- it can be alot of thing but its typically a 3 pin switching device that acts like a on off switch by appling a voltage to on leg that connects the other 2 together.
Ic- intergated circuit, meaning that chip contains a entire circuit resistors caps, diode and transitors.
transistors
transformer- step up or step down changethe voltage in exchange for current.
Now the radio...
120v AC comes in the cord first it goes through a fuse then into a transformer stepping down the 120vAC to 12v AC this then goes through a "brute force power supply" which starts with 4 diodes that change 12vac to +12v DC but its very dirty has lots of the ac still in the 12dc so it is put through a couple caps to filter off the dirtiness and make it more pure a couple resistor change the 12vdc to 2 different supplies 12v and 5v. this voltage is now clean and can be used by other components the voltage then goes to the auiod amp circuit, tuning circuit and the digital circuit. the tuning cicuit has an ant containing the signal that can be picked up and selected by inputing 5 volts, signal and a frequency required (suplied by the digital circuit0 this ic will then send audio out to the amp circuit. the digital circuit is powered by 5v it powers a couple ics the read the voltage change of the buttons which are also powered with 5 volts and when the button is pushed it connects the 5 volt to a resistor that changes the input voltage to the ic this then set off a chain of changes in the ics.changing the disp and the tuned station and the signal to amp circuit (volume) the volume is controled by its own ic that take the audio coming from the tuning circuit and adding or removing resistors internal to this ic that changes the input to the audio input for the amp ic that takes ra audio and voltage to bring the output upto volume this is conneced to the speakers and you get sound.
