The original Plasmas did only have a life span, or 1/2 life as it is actually referred to of about 30 000 hours. Half life is considered to be when brightness and sharpness are faded to about 50% of the manufactures recommendation. The new models now are upwards of 60 000 hours.... the same as an LCD. As far as screen burn in plasmas are the quickest but, every TV on the market except for the new DLP's, have that problem as they all use phosphor which is the cause. And the color problems are usually only on Enhanced definition models as apposed to High definition because it is a cheaper way of making a plasma... just goes to show you get what you pay for.

I haven't heard about the color red, but the color black is a problem, just because whenever it is on, there is a brightness to it, so true black is really hard, a good way to judge it for a plasma, is to turn it off and look at how black it is able to get then, because it can't get any blacker than that.
Don't forget the little splotches of purple haze. Just like on CRT's you can get splotches of color kinda tossed onto the screen.

They have the reputation, but like most things the first models to come out were not that great. Most of the problems have been resolved now and the prices are much better. That is why I always wait a few years before buying a new electronics technology.

If you have a Plasma screen, I would recommend having a voltage regulator wired to your main circuit breaker box. This will regulate and balance the power loads in your home, when an AC unit, or any other until with electric motors, goes on and off. In my house, I found that it even reduced electrical usage. I believe in California, it is tax deductible as an environmentally friendly device, because it reduces usage. In the Kansas City area, they will install one behind your meter, but they have a monthly charge for it. I found it cheaper to just buy it and have it installed.
