My cousin got married and had his reception at a beach..they had to get special permission..and then they had a clam bake and pig roast with the sun setting...fire works were set off later..it was SOOOO romantic and it's still talked about today...every one was given a box of sparklers and it was a great night all around...

400 people is going to be a bit pricey no matter how you cut it. It also depends on what part of the country you live in (and what time of year the wedding will be). A great place is a large city park but if the weather could be questionable (or very hot & sunny) you need a tent and a tent for 400 ppl is VERY expensive! Your best bet would be a legion post or something like that. The problem is that you might be hard pressed to find one that suits 400 guests comfortably.
Good luck!!!
Perhaps even a large field - you could do a BBQ style wedding reception. I have heard of these and seen them as well (I'm planning my wedding as well so I'm doing a lot of research).
My suggestion? Find a way to cut the guest list down. 400ppl is a VERY large reception and if you are working on a tight budget, your best bet would be to cut people from the list. A 400 person reception is usually reserved for folks that have a large budget and can afford to feed 400 people!

What is the biggest burger barn in your neck of the woods? Chances are they have a slow period when they would LOVE to host four hundred people. Guess what if you buy in bulk they might even cut prices. Many a couple has celebrated at the McD's where they first met - - - or at least it was a good face saving gesture. Oh and if you live any place where there is a Bowling Alley, great place for a reception, trust me, and again the group rate. Happy Wedding!

Depending on where you live, you can probably go to the American Legion or Knights of Columbus hall, and see what their rates are. Also, you could try the church where you are getting married. When my husband and I got married, we chose the American Legion, and then we had my sister in law do the centerpieces. They turned out to be beautiful, they were glass vases with iridesecent marbles, chiffon, and a calla lily inside. On the top, we put a clear plastic planter with a floral arrangement. They turned out very nice and the hall provided the table linens. We had a nice reception with dinner, an open bar, dance floor, and all for 200 people for about $4,000. And it was worth every penny.
BTW, congrats!!!!! :)

in case you may't hit upon a inn, backyard or park what about searching at unique places to have your reception? A Comedy club has a room that you'll be able to have your reception in. they have menu recommendations, can decorate the room with your hues, provide a DJ for song and to run the coach. in addition they can oversee the format of the room, be particular each and every thing is done and all of us is having a great time. they could even help you with each and every thing in spite of the undeniable fact that the cake! at the same time as all the different places are booked the great places get missed it is how i inspect it.
