Sit ups work great for building and toning the abs but there are other exercises that you can do also to target the entire muscle range.I do anywhere from 600-1000 every other day in between sets of other exercises rather than waiting til the end of my workout. This helps ensure that I'll do them instead of reaching the end of my other body part and being too exhausted.
Some other exercises that you can do are hanging or lying leg raises and weighted side bends.
It's important that you know that no exercise targets fat loss in a specific area so if body fat is an issue try a diet low in carbohydrates and high in protein while ensuring that you eat your fruits and vegetables.
One trick that bodybuilders use to enhance tone is to flex a muscle group as hard as you can and hold it for 1-4 minutes for a few sets after the other work is done. This is known as isometric stimulation and helps improve the appearance of the tone and definition.
Abdominals can be trained every day unlike some other body parts because of the structure and composition of muscle fibers.Calves are the only other body part where this is acceptable.Hope this helps.Joe

You needa find an abdominal workout online or in a fitness magazine. Instead of just doing plain situps, your routine should have a variation of ab crunches (regular, side, reverse, 6 inches, feet up in the air, etc.).

Try doing about 25 rep and 3 sets of each variation. Don't worry about having some big fancy number (like 300 crunches in a day or something). When you do each crunch, sqeeze your body hard, tighten everything and hold it up at the top for a second. Honestly, if you do them right, you'll be burning by 25.

If you have FAT on your stomach, you must must must do cardio to burn it off or else you'll be hinding your ab muscles under a layer of fat. Do cardio 3-5 times a week for 30 mins at a time.

If you are trying to get rid of a gut or extra weight, you can do a million and still not have nice abs. You have to do more aerobic exercise for that.
Also, doing the same exercise every day will not help. Try all kinds of ab exercises and vary them daily. Pick a number you know you can do with effort and increase the reps each time you do that exercise again.
Good luck

As many as you can, and then do a little more the next day. And the day after that. As so on.

Exercising is okay, but I wouldn't be overly obsessed about the features of your body.
