I saw my bird breathing with her mouth open when I took her out of her cage. Am I stressing her out too much? Also, she was mumbling and it sounded like an old man mumbling. Should I not take her out of her cage anymore? Thank you for your help

They puff and pant when they've been upset. Work with her slowly to take her out. Try just holding your finger in there without touching her a few minutes each day. If she is truly ill she will bob her tail, stay fluffy all the time, she won't clean the poop off of her behind either. Keets just take getting to know. Mine are completely in charge of my life now, ha!

They do pluck their own feathers out...also pacing back and forth in their cages. And when you put your hand in does he truly run from you? Make noise. Mumbling is part of the way they eat. As they grind their food in the throat, and need gravel for that. Hence the gravel liners for the bottom of your cage on the market. So...if this is your first parakeet here is some tips. Bird guard for the pin feathers that they might get from mites...You don't see these mites but they are there. Also can cause a breathing problem. Keeping your bird covered at night is a good thing. Allows him to be able to rest, and feel secure. Peeking under this can only disturb him and make him nervouse. Take completely off in am. And talk to him often. Birds are social. But need you to be calm and have a routine with him. I used a pencil at first to get my bird to perch on it. And take him out of cage. Hope this helps.

it will pull out its own feathers,,,,,any bird gets scared when one takes it out of the cage and the open mouth is in defense...mumbling,,,,,it could be trying to copy a sound it heard.

If it's alive. lol. You know what? I had a parakeet, and that's just how they are sometimes. Some of them are just easily stressed. It probably has nothing to do with anything you did, and more to do with your pets natural temperament.
