I am a big fan of Norton anti virus but i still use avg free version.......Here is a million dollar question : guess why?....for the simple reason that Norton anti virus,mcafee,pc-cillin,etc....are very good and pc-cillin even have developed a technology called true prevent that is way ahead...but they all take so much resources and eat up my ram like nothing.....even after having an AMD Athlon 64 bit at 2 GHz and 256 MB ddr ram and 160 GB stat hard disk feel like working on a Pentium 700 MHz....
If you are an expert user (i mean in terms of internet usage and operating system handling) than you must be knowing bout that which actions causes flaws in security..in this case, you don't need a norton type heavy antivirus proggies, avg would do fine for ya......but if you are a true noob or rookie than you need a heavy anti virus prog like norton coz they are heavy coz they take care of each and everything on ur system with their new and advanced technologies whether you take care or not..
so now you just have to do a self analysis and fit urself in either of a category and get a antivirus prog according to that

Ignore the typical Norton Anti-Virus recommendation. There are many viruses written specifically to target users using Norton. Plus Norton is expensive, hogs system resource and is generally slow to respond to new virus attacks (only updates once per week).
Use Bit Defender 9. It has a small installation file, takes minimal system resources, and updates itself against automatically every virus thread every hour. (presuming you are connected to the net). In fact, it does such a good job of updating its virus definition file, and not taking system resource, that you will not even realise it until you check the "last update" option. Once I ditched Norton for this I never looked back.
It is also the cheapest antivirus software compared to others on the market that does not even offer as much feature.

Well, my opinion from the experience I have had for approximately 4 to 5 years is Norton Antivirus Security 2006, it has worked just fine for me, I like it very much, every time someone or something is trying to hack or intrude , Norton pops up a window which says if I want to protect myself from whatever is trying to attack my computer, in which I immediately say yes, protect me and belive me it has saved my computer from many unwanted things. If I were you , I would install Norton Antivirus with Security 2006.

AVG is one of the best anti virus software and it is free .
also norton is not free and is resource heavy; unlike avg which does not slow down your computer.

Norton Anti-virus..it is simply the bet. you'll know it when u have it. anyway, the ways to get it depends all on your activities. if u want to get it from the internet, go to google and pay and get it. if u can go to the computer store, it doesn't make a difference. go and buy it.

Avast is the best as per my opinion.
You can download & register for 1 year free.
Please visit www.avast.com
Avast is the best against WORM that even Norton is not.
Also it is free for Home user.
If want to purchase, you can choose either AVAST or AVG.
