I'm a single parent of a toddler. Please advice on which State has the most potential for me n my child in terms of cost of living, education, jobs, health care, accommodation n etc...We wish to move to where it's also safe. However since we're moving from a city, too much "quietness" would also dampen our spirits.

you can check the classifieds from my area for rent prices and jobs, it's in ohio. the only bad city listed in the classifieds is the city of ravenna, do not send your child to ravenna city schools, kent city schools are much better. recordpub.com ........... oh yeah i should mention it is right under the snow belt, sometimes we get 3-6 inches of snow a night in the winter (sometimes)

Oklahoma has some of the lowest costs of living/housing and most areas are safe but may be a little too quiet for you. Stick with Tulsa or OKC...they are the only decent cities in Okla. You would probably be most likely to be able to afford buying a house in Okla. than you would in another state. There are a lot of job opportunities...but if they exist for you will depend on what you do for a living. The school systems in OKC and Tulsa are pretty good (small town schools in okla are typically inadequate), I went to public schools in OKC and they were enough to be prepared for college.

For a liberal environment and fun atmosphere, look into Portland, Or. Cost of living and housing is high and rising there, but they do have a lot of job opportunities for just about any field (don't move their if you will have to work as a cashier or something similar...it will be hard to get by) Safety in some areas of Portland is an issue at night, but it is very safe during the day, especially in the downtown area. I don't know about the school system in Portland...but everyone who lives there seems to really enjoy the town. Also, if you live near their Max train line you won't even have to own a car.

Check out North Carolina. Cities like Charlotte, Greensboro, and Raleigh are great. There is lots to do, the cost of living is decent and the school system is excellent.

North Carolina offers a wealth of options for you and your child. Good jobs, education, childcare, beautiful cities (Asheville, Charlotte, Gastonia, Greensboro, Raleigh) with beautiful people and the cost of living is affordable. No place is 100% safe. Home is where you make it.
