Based on what I've read and heard, I used to think that Islam was against terrorism and martyrdom, and it was only a few idiot fanatics that gave it a bad name, but recently I've been hearing, and reading about extracts from the Koran that actually adheres to terrorism and war against those who don't believe in Mohammad.

So which is it? Show evidence/ links with your answers please

Well, it does say to "Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth, (even if they are) of the People of the Book, until they pay the Jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued.", so violence seems to be condoned.

However, it also warns to "Fight in the cause of God against those who fight you, but do not transgress limits. God does not love transgressors" So it condones religious wars, but I think terrorism counts as transgression. But that last statement is more a matter of opinion.

2 things are really bugging me and probably a few other people too in the UK at the moment over Muslims who are here.

1'st, Why is it only Muslims who are involved in terrorism here at the moment? Why is it Muslims preaching hate on the streets and in Mosques, planting bombs, etc?
I don't here of Christian bombings here, or Jewish terrorism, or any other religion, so why is that?

2nd If the Muslim 'man on the street' is so against terrorism, why do they instantly come out in support of Muslims when they are arrested like in the last few days?
If my next door neighbour was arrested i wouldn't be on tv saying 'it's a disgrace, a mistake, he is innocent, an act against his religion, let's have a demonstration' like has been said yesterday by a Muslim leaders.

I would be saying, well ok, let's wait to see the evidence and if he is guilty then let me cast the first stone.

To Muslims who are genuine, who are honest and law abiding people, when are YOU going to do something about these religeous fanatics?
YOU have to take some responsiblilty and speak out against people who they know are planning attacks.
Why are people from YOUR Mosque visiting training camps in Pakistan and your doing nothing.

to b honest i really have had enough of it all. no religion should condone violence and i dont believe that islam does but when u hear stories or read stuff u cant help but think that there must b something in the koran which leads extremists to come to the conclusion that it is ok to fight a religious war or these ppl are just mental.
im not being racsist and i have nothing against different religions but mixing religions together in one community doesnt seem to b working anymore so maybe its time for some kind of segregation.

Many people quote the verse "And Kill the non-believers whereever you find them" and say Islam supports terrorism.

Its totally WRONG! Why? Analyze this...

Any statement has a context in its background. The critics of Islam knowingly or un-knowingly quote just this verse but dont mention the context, neither the verse that follows it.

Whats the context? Well this verse refers to war. During war kill the un-believers who fight and oppress you is the explanation. Further Prophet Muhammed (PBUH) condemned killing civillians, women, children, farmers and even destroying plants and vegetation.

PLus, read the next verse it says "if the un-believers seek peace, ESCORT them to a place of safety"

The maximum an army general will say "let them go" (that too is rare)
Here Islam says "ESCORT them to a place of safety"

Decide yourself if Islam supports terrorism. ANd plz learn about Islam from authentic un-biased sources.

well u can go on for hours on this topic, debate day and night yet it will never end. people of one faith will never accept the other. this is human nature.

well i really dont know what to say i think it is better that the terrorists kill us rather than people of other faith and religion. because the after math of such bombings on muslims and reputation of islam is more dangerous than the incident itself. why should we live such a disgusting life where people are saying 'ur religion, ur God,ur prophets and ur faith are nothing but fraudery'

muslims dont have anything more than self-respect and dignity and their faith in Allah. and when someone takes that away from them or disrespects them, it is almost equal to being dead for us.

yes we agree that there are people who are killing innocents but they are destroying us as well. but all i can do is pray......... pray that Allah Himself will put a stop to this for the Love of His beloved prophet Muhammed(pbuh).

its so disheartening when someone gives half quotes from quran and misinterprets it, when they call a prophet a nymphomaniac and sex offender. they are doing the same thing what terrorists are doing.

and i am fed up being insulted and disgraced all the time. it is so easy to play the pin pointing game here but .............. i will wait.

i know my Allah has given signs before and i know that He will, sooner or later, give evryone a sign. i can only pray for that day to come. Inshaallah.

may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon each and every one and may He guide us on the right path. i cant and wont defend my verdict anymore.

the Koran literally states the following
It is the duty of every Muslim to excercise Jihad(convert pagans to Islam)
He can do so with his mouth(talk) his hands(work) his heart(love or marrriage) and by the sword(war).
Any pagan refusing to convert is to be killed
However the Koran also states that students of the scripture(Jews and Christians) are not to be harmed they can only be requested to convert and made to pay a fine.
So the Koran literally forbids attacks against Jews and Christians but these radicallists interpret the Koran to fit their vision.

A very popular guy against Islam and many people who lack the knowledge of Islam admire him called Craig Winn, an author of a book called "Prophet of Doom" was on a live Radio show to show the world how evil Islam really is and how much it really teaches terrorism.
The result might shock you and many of his followers...

Islam means "submision" ..
The greeting of Islam is : assalamualaykum = Peace be upon you !
Islam is the religion of tolerance and coexistance ..
Islam is the religion of Dignity : You could and should defend your homeland from aggresion and invasion . One can resist occupation .
Islam teaches us not to kill innocent people ; children/women/oldmen, and not to cut trees or destroy churches . Only to FIGHT those who fight you !
And all that is not TERRORISM ! only in the minds of some persons and goverments in western countries who want to stop the peaceful spread of Islam !
koran mentioned many parts of chapters for fighting enemies , but not all apply to today !
Islam is not religion of Agression AT ALL !!!

Contrary to many people's interpretation, jihad is anything but a "holy" war.
Jihad, as presented in the Qur'an implies the striving towards the ideal. This jihad, particularly involves change in one's self and mentality. It may concern the sacrifice of material property, social class constraints, and even emotional comfort, solely for, salvation and the worship of God alone. As a result, one who practices jihad will gain inward peace in this world and reward in the hereafter.
Jihad involves noticeable effort for righteousness. This means that the effort concentrated in jihad is a step in the true and ultimate path of Islam: the effort addressed to the benefit of one's self. Thus, jihad on this level is individual and self-centered. It aims at purification of the soul. This effort is simply doing good and seeking divine mercy and the pardon of Allah.

Jihad also includes striving for and establishing justice. Before someone can strive for justice in their community, justice must be one of their main religious and moral principles.

Jihad may also reflect the position of Islam regarding crisis management and enforcement of humanitarian international laws. Fighting a war in the name of justice or Islam - to deter an aggressor, for self-defense, or to establish justice and freedom to practice religion - would also be considered jihad.

In response to "somdeep":

Do not think that I came to bring peace on the earth; I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I came to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; and a man’s enemies will be the members of his household." Matthew 10:34-36
