because we just stand by and watch as the horrors open up in our world around us.
What can i do im just one person is the mentality we all have.
but if we united for the good of man there are others who are ready to crush us.
What can we do but move into an unpopulated part of our world and live away from the horrors i think that is the answer.

It's a basic protective psychological response to a situation in which we feel that we have no power -- not dissimilar to the withdrawal, displacement (acting out in inappropriate directions) or even dissociation that can come out of abuse.

Those with the most overt power are doing everything they can to keep us convinced that there's nothing we can do. Or to channel our outrage into safely prepackaged protests like Live8.

Or keep us distracted by economic and social pressures -- how many of us are too worried about paying our bills or keeping our families functioning to put much effort into changing the system?

I don't know what the answer is, except to not buy into it. To think about whether or not the newest electronic gadget actually improves our lives. (I've spent the last four weeks without a mobile phone because I couldn't afford to top it up and was amazed by the reduction in stress levels.) To choose carefully what music and media we fill our minds with, how we choose to spend our money, what working conditions we are willing to accept, how we prioritize our time.

We have far more power than we realise.

We have learned to tolerate the horror around us because it has become ordinary. No only that, but also the media outlets do their very best not only not to report on the horror (such as the attack on Iraq), but they also justify the horror because they have a commercial interest that the horror continues.

Only a major shift in the power structure of this country will rid the world of evil. We have to stand united in order to achieve that, but the Bush junta has done everything they can in order to divide us in accordance to the old principle: "Divide and conquer." This principle is around since ancient Rome and it still works.

Who says we are apathetic? The level of participation in these discussions must tell you something. Could be we don't have the right leadership, could be we don't what to take the obvious actions, could be we need to find who can stand up for us and give us positive directions, could be that there are those who are willing but so few will listen. Could be allot of things, but I would not call it apathy.

Mostly because of our postmodern cocoon that we hide ourselves in.

Either we don't know what's going on in the world because we never even turn on the news or open a newspaper (not even the New York Times).

Or, we don't want to know what's going on because our world is nice the way it is.

Either way, we can't just blame our government for everything, it's not the greatest, but we enable them to be that way.

Because we're flooded with the horrors every minute of the day on the news. CNN, ABC, FOX, NBC, and on and on. If they can't find any horrors to report they will start the what if game to create some.

Most of it is far away from us and so we don't carry the emotional response like you would be more prone to if it happens directly to you. I don't feel like our gov't is walking over us, it could be much worse without the gov't we have in the USA.

Because they are not happening in your face, but on your television. If some country were invading your country and killing your family in your streets, would you apathetically stay inside and watch it on tv?

Constant news showing misery and violence that we become numb to them. With the advent of 24 hour TV and news programs we are becoming immune. Add to that video games and movies.

because we have been desensitized - mainly by the t.v. many people (particularly americans) are very self-absorbed and unconcerned about the world as a whole.

and then there's another sect of us who do care, but don't know what to do to change things.
