Actually, it depends on the car. Depending on the year, make, and model, the car may not be able to be shifted from "D" (drive) to "R" without the brake being fully depressed. It's sort of like with manual transmissions. Most 5 speed manuals have a safety inter-lock that prevents you from accidentally dropping the gear down into Reverse if you were in 5th by forcing you to move the gear shift over to the 1/2nd gate, then back to the 5/Reverse gate to drop down into reverse.

However, if you WERE able to get the automatic to slip into reverse while in drive, rolling down the road, at the very least, you would slow down. If you were traveling at a higher rate of speed, it depends then on the strength of the gears and the rest of your drive train as to what would happen. I can safely bet that you'd probably shear off a few teeth on the gear if not outright bind up the tranny and possibly twist the drive train at the same time.

"R" is not "Rest". It is the "Race Gear".
You should slow down.
