That's a good point. When you board a train and things start to move by outside, how do you really know the train is not standing still and everything else is moving? Same with an elevator... for all you know maybe the elevator stands still and it is the building that is moving up and down. If that had been the case with the elevators in the World Trade Center the terrorists driving those planes would never have been able to hit them.

Just think of how deep the basement would have to be... but on the plus side the window washers could just stand on the sidewalk while the building humped the cellar.
