I am assuming this is an inside dog. If you don't want to put him in a crate you may try to put him in a bathroom If there is more then one but make sure all items are out of reach.
Another option can be (if you have the room out side) is to build a run/ pen where he has the room to run around a bit. Adding a few toys in either run or bathroom will help to keep him busy.

Sorry but the best thing to do is confine the dog when you aren't home. Crate training isn't hard and the dog won't resent you because you did it. Besides do you come home to find stuff torn up and yell at the dog? Or would you rather come home, release the dog from the crate and praise the heck out him for being a good boy all day?
Also BEFORE you go out, take the dog on a long walk (at least 30 min). A tired dog is a dog that won't be getting into trouble.
Okay another suggestion I just remembered. Get a stuffed dog. When you come home, praise the stuffed dog first (I know sounds stupid LOL). I never tried this one but some people say it works because the tries to figure out why the stuffed dog got praised.

Dogs actually like crates once they're used to them - it's the equivalent of having their own den. While we might look at it as mean, they actually like it -- given that they're not in there all the time. My dog doesn't mind it a bit.
And as far as your dog being destructive -- if you give your dog some good exercise before you leave so that he is tired, he will be less likely to be destructive. I would also suggest setting up some limitations for your dog -- right now he probably feels responsible for protecting you because you've let him think he's in charge (that's what dogs think when they do whatever they want). When you leave, it probably freaks him out because he doesn't know where you are or how to do his job -- being your protector. By establishing yourself as boss, you'll take this weight off your dog's shoulders and he will be much happier. (Your roommate will be happier, too, because your dog will listen to you when you tell him to do things :)
Hope this helps!

Really, your only other option is to place him in a room with vinyl/tile floor. Preferably a kitchen or utility room. Use a gate(s) to confine him to that area. Make sure to leave all the provisions he needs if you are gonna be gone for extreme amounts of time.
For entertainment purposes, my dog loves to have the radio or tv on. I think it's the comfort of the voices!
To show my dog it's not a bad thing to be left alone at home, I have a few hollowed out bleached animal bones. I fill them with peanut butter and freeze them overnight. My dogs loves to work on those for some time. You could also use a kong for this. ANother great toy would be one of those buster cubes. You place a portion of their daily dry food in the cube. Your dog has to move it around( a lot) to geet the food to slowly drop out. These things with keep your pets attention for awhile. Then, hopefully he will decided to rest on a bed you have provided for him!

You need to begin crate training him now. Crate training is not cruel...dogs are naturally a 'den' animal and they enjoy having a safe place of their very own. Your dog will be happier and safer in a crate when you are not there to supervise his activity. Dogs can and will tear up items that are hazardous to their health...so to avoid disaster....go with a crate.

lock him in the bathroom or your bedroom.
Also buy him a penut butter ball. Those are also called kongs.
You may want to ask a vet or animal trainer or the humane society for suggestions. Maybe you can find a doggie babysitter.
