I've had boy cousins who've been shy so it's always had to be me to start talking with them every since we were kids. I guess you should talk to him about what interests him like computers, travelling, etc. Did you have a fight or something that there are problems between you? If so, you can try the direct approach.
Ignore the other answerers. Maintaining good family relations is not disgusting.

Try and find something in common with him - like music, reading, sport, travel - sharing a passion would be important for both of you and won't trespass on areas of your lives that maybe you'd rather not get involved with.

buy him a football season ticket to man united he will love you forever. and you wont have to put up with him, on saturdays.
if you cannot afford that the best way is to tell him you dont like him ,
he will follow you around all daytrying to find out why.
