It exercises your brain, and opens your imagination, to paint the picture the words are describing. Like -
Answers that intrigue you, questions that tease you, some serious, others peculiar, some plain ridiculous. She sat in the plush leather reclining chair and leaned back. The keyboard she had rested on her lap, so the flickering screen wouldn't glare so brightly and strain her eyes.
While she tapped the words using both her index fingers, she listened to the manic music, crazy cartoon voices and soft clatter of glass balls in the background, as her daughter played with marbles and watched Nick toons.
She paused, and stared at the words she had typed. Ramblings that just appeared to fill the screen. Not much made sense, and she wondered at the point of it all. There were more important things to worry about, true.
The terrorist threat splashed across all the newspapers, the Palestine question, with Israel advancing murderously into Lebanon to tackle the murderers in the civillian midst, paying Littlewoods catalogue on time next week.
But then she thought 'Do you know what I fancy? A p!ss pot size cup of tea, and a couple of jammie dodgers.' to which she placed the keyboard back on the tower desk, and stood up with a stretch. "Bugger this," she exclaimed, "I'm off to put the kettle on."

people will tell you it increases vocabulary, intelligence, imagination,
plus visual awareness. All of which is perfectly true, however I'm betting they haven't told you why. The answer is that when reading just as when watching TV or day dreaming, the brain enters an hypno-gogic state. Just as when a person is hypnotised
this leaves them open to suggestion and so far more receptive to information fed into their brain. This also accounts for people
swearing by the fact that reading a good book helps you to fall asleep at night. Your brain is of course already in a state of sleep readiness through your reading.

Reading opens up the cells in our brains that are closed to ideas. During the process of not learning these cells of course do not become dormant but get no food for thought and thus become defunct. That is why they say one must read every day at least one page. The brain receives its signals thru these cells which open up and receive their signals and transmit it further to the mind (read: heart). And this action prompts the reader to act in a manner that befits the person's understanding. Of course this is the scientific or biological inference. Reading helps us increase our vocabulary and makes us aware of the various events that surround us on a daily basis. It comprises a vital part of our education and understanding various aspects of a wonderful journey called LIFE thru which all of us pass.

It truly does expand your mind.
I used to be such a slow-thinker, slow-witted, not very articulate.
And then I started reading some books. And I don't mean Harry Potter, I mean books like "the tipping point", "Guns germs and steel" etc....
It expanded my vocabulary so much and has gotten so far in my career. Now, go figure, I am well-spoken, articulate, and the most rewarding part about it, I can actually conversate with colleagues or friends about things that are stimulating!
Reading can change your life!

As you read, you absorb the information written in the book. Your memory is gets exercise. Your brain begins to re-wire itself. Literal billions and billions of neurotransmitters are formed, reformed, and connected. You begin to see things in your mind's eye, your imagination. You understand how the author of your reading material thinks, believes, and feels. You experience things that may have never otherwise been possible. You can learn all about Africa without ever going there, simply by reading. You can go to magical kingdoms and lands. Your mind clears, grows, evolves, dreams, and creates. You begin to unravel the mysteries of the universe.

If you walk for like 30 minutes, your heart rate goes up for 30 minutes. This makes you stronger, my enduring, and overall healthier. The reason is because it's like practicing your heart and body. What does this have to do with reading? Nothing! =P Well your brain goes to work and it develops thanks to the simultaneous practice you give it.
