The original recorded Version was sung by Rudy Vallee. He is most credited with singing the song. However, Frances Williams sang the song in the original show that it was written for.

Vallee released his version before the film Casablanca. There was discussion during the production of the film between the producers and the composer for the film. The composer didn't want to use a well known song suck as "Time goes By" he wanted to compose his own song to be used.

Everyone, it's a standard.

But here's what internet says:
As Time Goes By was a British comedy TV series that aired from 1992 to 2005; it used the song "As Time Goes By" as its theme. It was set in Holland Park, London and occasionally in the English countryside (notably Hampshire), Paris, Los Angeles and Norwich. As Time Goes By was written by Bob Larbey and produced and directed by Sydney Lotterby. The theme song was sung by Joe Fagin

Jimmy Durante's version was first, but it was made famous by Dooley Wilson in the 1942 film classic Casablanca.

The singer in the film "Casablanca" was Dooley Wilson. This was the original version but must have been covered by many others.

Dooley Wilson sang it in Casablanca, while playing the piano. Play it again, Sam!
