You can buy scratch pads from pet shops which will cover any area a cat keeps going to, the cat scratches that and the carpet underneath stays safe. I have tried many different 'remedies' which worked at that spot but my cat just moved on to another area!! Why fight it just cover it!

You could try distracting your cat by making a loud and startling noise when your cat is scratching the stairs, you could also spray the stairs with orange spray which will make sure the cat goes nowhere near the carpet.

Thats what you signed up for when getting a cat Im afraid...

Like kids

Maybe find a cat and carpet friendly stick substance ie syrip (as a vet and carpet cleaner.

Put food where you want it to scratch and a water pistol were you dont.

Ask a pet shop

Buy a scratching post from a pet accessory store. Some mats would help too, as your cat will scratch these instead of the carpet.

We bought cheap carpet tiles and put them in the areas the cats like to scratch. It saves a lot of money and heartache as now they don't scratch the carpet, only the tile!

Make a scratching post.

All you need to do is attach a wooden post to a base, wrap some old carpet around it and hey presto, you have one happy cat.

It may look unsightly in your house, but at least it will save your carpet.

when you see it scratching the furniture spray it with a spray bottle that is full of water cats hate water and it will learn that you don't want it to do that if it is messing on the rug have the rug cleaned and change the litter maybe he dosen't like the kind you are using and clean it more offten some cats are very clean and don't like to use a dirty litter box

Put pepper down, they hate it. Or my mum used to use a cat repellent spray to stop the tom cats sniffing around the front door of the flat when our cat was on heat. I don't know where she got it but I would imagine any good pet supplier would sell it.

Thats the way of the cat!
Scatching post. Stand it in the way of the furniture and the cat will transfer its habit onto the post. Not got a post? Get one. Works every time.
