1. Different people like to believe in different things. Like laws of every country is not the same. That's how differences increased. 2. Some people follow saints, priests and when the number of followers grow it becomes a particular religion. This is one reason for differences. But most religions have been derived from the message of God brought to us by the prophets.
3. According to Islam, there were about 250,000 prophets sent to man. The first being Adam and the last being Prophet Muhammed. Apart from these there were many prophets who we do not know specifically about but each brought the message of God. The messages had basically the same good values that most religions follow with differences emerging as time passed.

According to an answer that a Christian just gave me:

"god gave us a free will and some people are so stupid they decided to make there own religions because christianity was to easy. they are also to blind to see that everything in the bible is true and coming true."

As for me, I think that's completely wrong. The correct answer is that many people have different interpretations of 'what God wants' or 'how to live a good life'. Some of these people have been lucky enough for their philosophies to become movements. Others have faded into obscurity.

There are six billion people in the world. As far as I see it, that means six billion different interpretations of the divine, the afterlife, and morality. It's just that we choose to, more or less, lump these into categories as efficiently as possible. This is becoming increasingly difficult with time.

I believe its because everyone thinks they know the answer.

Religions have been spawned off leaders who choose to interpret the bible, the talmud, or whatever reading, passage or story, in their own way.

How many different religions have been spawned off the bible alone? And how many of those religions believe they are right and the others are wrong?

There are other "religions" also like televangelist who seem to create their own brand of religions for mostly financial success and wealth. That's whats truly disappointing.

It's kind of like that game telephone. Things get mixed up after so many people repeat them. If you think about it MOST religions have the same core aspects of morality (don't murder, don't commit adultery...etc). Maybe over the years people have just added in things and taken out things leading to different religions.

Qur'an points out, because of undue selfishness, transgression, aggression and mutual jealousy (al-Baqarah 2:213; Al 'Imran 3:19). The Qur'an also points out that these divisions arose among people when they ignored the word of Allah and His guidance and "sold Allah's words for a paltry price"(al-Baqarah 2:79), when they went to extremes (ghuluww) in their religion, when they corrupted Allah's message (tahrif), when they consigned some part of it to oblivion, or when they took one part of Allah's teachings and ignored the other. Each group divided up Allah's messages and instead of following the knowledge (al-'ilm) that was given to them by Allah's prophets, they followed their own whims and wishes (ahwa').

Thus some evil religious leaders went astray and also misled their followers (al-Baqarah 2:120, 121; al-Ma'idah 5:177; Al-An'am 6:119; al-Rum 30:29; al-Jathiyah 45:18; Muhammad 47:14, 16)

The Qur'an makes us fully aware that there are a variety of religious communities, each happy with its own version of the truth (al-Mu'minun 23:53; al-Rum 30:32). They all possess some truth which is a part of the true Islam in their midst, but regrettably none of them has preserved the message of Allah in its complete and authentic form (al-Ma'idah 5:13-14). Allah sent Prophet Muhammad to guide humanity to the original and authentic faith and the message of Allah.

Because every religion was created by a man, to benefit himself. If I want to benefit myself, I can't create Catholicism, I have to come up with something original. On the good side, it gives people a choice which religion they want to throw their hard-earned dollars at.

If I was the angel and because God threw me out of heaven and I became the Devil as it says in the Bible, then I would want to stir up as much confusion as possible on the planet, because remember that God gave me authority over this world as the King of darkness. So then like I was saying, I would want to create as much confusion as possible and im mad at god too and i hate his creations, me and you! So then i would really want to keep you out of heaven just as I had to stay away from it....
