You want to be careful with small dogs - many of them are not great with young kids because young kids scare them or make them nervous. A dog that is a bit larger with a calm temperament might be better for very young kids.
Breed of dog isn't as important as the dog's temperament. If you go to a shelter, check out the dogs and find one who is calm. If you're getting a dog from a breeder, you'll see the parents as well as the puppies in the litter and you can pick the best one for you there. Also, a breeder will be able to tell you what their dogs are like. Why not go to a dog show or get an all-breed book and find some dogs you like the looks of, then research that breed to find out what they're like.
In my opinion the dogs that are the best with small kids are usually larger breeds (but dogs are individuals and that varies).
As a breed in general, golden retrievers, newfoundlands (the absolute best), soft coated wheaten terriers, springer spaniels, beagles, bassets, bearded collies, greyhounds are all gentle dogs who as a rule, like kids.
Take your time and look arond.

Being good with kids isn't a breed trait but something in each individual's personality. That said, do you really need a puppy? An adult dog will already have it's personality formed and will be much more stable with the kids. It's also harder for kids to harm an adult dog, whereas with puppies they can get a little too rough. Consider finding an adoption group that fosters dogs. It is very possible that a foster dog may currently be living with small children (I foster for an adoption group and have a 4yo). A dog that you KNOW has been exposed to young kids and done well is a much surer bet than a puppy who may not appreciate being poked and prodded and hugged and kissed. And even if you want a purebred dog there are many breed-specific rescues out there where you can find one. Check http://www.akc.org to learn more about the different breeds. They also have links to breed rescues on that site. Good luck :)

Labradors!!! and reading the answers I'm not on my own - I've never met one (in my experience) that didn't get on with children - just be very careful - meet the parents of your pup (to view likely behaviour) and then get your puppy into classes as soon as poss - to socialise and learn good habits - take your children along too as training a dog should be by the whole household to be most successful. My labs are great with kids and one especially loves to play with kids and reacts calmly but still playful enough. There are smaller breeds of labradors - we have a hunting lab who is very gentle and alot smaller than a show lab.

cocker spaniel working strain or golden retriever. both breeds are noted in having a good temprement and are good with children. cocker spaniels are quite small and non threatening and golden retrievers are just like big teddy bears. its not so much the type of breed you should be worried about - pay more attention to the breeder:ie make sure that they care more about the benefit of the pups they put out in the world than cold hard cash and you may prefer to look for a breeder that home rears rather than kennel rearing - this means the puppies will be more used to household noises and people etc.

perhaps you would possibly want to call your interior reach veterinarian and be conscious what breed they propose due on your hypersensitive reactions, cats, and children. i in my opinion would not propose a intense strung canines like I have (Weimaraner). They take a tremendous variety of time and if I had children i comprehend i'd not be in a position to juggle each and every of the responsibility. that is too undesirable in spite of the undeniable fact that that you're allergic to Labradors. I have a chocolate lab and that i must claim, he's the great canines I ever had. good success on your new project!

You can't beat a Golden Retriever for being with children, but there isn't necessarily a 'best breed' out there, it all depends on how the dog is trained, my neighbour has two rottweilers who adore her children and are as soft as mush with them. Where I was savagely attacked by an evil shitzu as a child!
Pop into your local vet and ask them their opinion, and good luck

I have always had German Shepherds, and they have always been very very good. I have also heard that Boxers are adorable with children. But I think too that it all depends on how the dog is raised, if they are raised with love they will have no reason to be naughty, where as if they are beaten-up... well, I would bite too!
