Ramayana teaches the qualities of good and evil rulers and the ethics a ruler should keep in his life. I listen to Ramayana teachings whenever I get opportunity and this is my understanding.

Every thing is great abt Ramayana. Very few ppl in India actually read Ramayana but they recite it without understanding&very simply they mean"JAI SIYA RAM" for every verse or line! Friend its too difficult to talk here in detail but i specially say ,its simply about ideal man. Not surpising..Stabbing at back(BALI's EPISODE),
motivating even animals for personal need,& sacrificing beloved virginity tested wife,,for maitaining power&confidence of ppl( SITA PARITYAG..AFTER FIRE TEST) are few of those examples...ARE THE ELEMENTS OF IDEAL MAN. Ramayan is great for providing knowledge abt Astrology, politics, devotion, duties, some SHABAR MANTRAS(if u beleive),
references to VEDAS, goods& bads and ETHICS OF LIFE. NEEDED is to read it learn it& understand it. Do try to read it on a table& chair like a TEXT BOOK,you will be overwhelmed& impressed. GOOD LUCK

Ramayana was written by Valmiki.Valmiki was originally a dalit dacoit called Ratna who haunted the forests and preyed upon the unwary travellers. One day a sage called Narada passed through the forest. Ratna saw him and immediately attacked him. Narada asked him why he did his foul deeds to which Ratna replied that it was to take care of his family, which consisted of his aged parents, wife and children. The sage then wanted to know if they would be willing to share in the punishment for his misdeeds. Ratna was sure they would but the sage advised him to go and ask them. Ratna tied the sage to a tree and ran home to ask his family if they would share in his punishments. His family replied in the negative, saying that it was Ratna's duty to take care of them and they were not responsible for the path he chose to do so. Disappointed, Ratna returned to the forest and confessed to the sage. The sage told him to repent for his sins and to stop his evil ways and to chant the name of Lord Rama. Legend has it that Valmiki meditated in one place till an ant-hill formed on top of him without him realising it. Hence the name Valmiki (from 'Valmik' which means ant-hill in Sanskrit). Valmiki became a maharishi (great sage).
Later Narad came to him again and described the arada lists- the sixteen qualities of the ideal man and said that Rama was the complete man possessing all sixteen of these qualities.Valmiki was then given the power to see the life of Rama. Then he wrote them down.
Valmiki portrays Rama not as a supernatural being, but as a human with all the attendant shortcomings, who encounters moral dilemmas but who overcomes these by simply adhering to the dharma--the righteous way.
Ramayana illustrates the very human nature of the hero Rama help to reinforce the basic moral behind the story that men do not have to be supernatural to be righteous.
