Since the only means of communication here is written, there's no gestures or facial expressions to know when a person is joking. I use 'lol' b/c I have a sarcastic and dry sense of humor; a lot of people would think I was being rude if I didn't clarify, although I do agree that it's way overdone.

You are right and I can't stop myself. Sometimes I type it and then erase it. It drives me nuts!
