ANY food from grocery store or wal mart is cheap food, even if they have a brand name.. too much filler and not enough meat protein...
in the long run feeding a better quality food will save you money since the cat will eat a lot less (and have less poops) these foods list Chicken MEAL or turkey MEAL or lamb MEAL as first ingredient and dont contain by-products (beaks feet feathers = fillers)
put the food in the microwave for 10 seconds to bring out the oils and help get kitty interested in eating
if you can afford a computer and the internet you can afford good cat food

Because it doesn't taste good. Think like a cat. Or smell good. The brand name cat food was "Food" and now what is this stuff?
If everybody has to pull together--I agree with the people who suggest mixing the two types of cat food. Perhaps cats will tolerate a 50/50 mixture of cheap and brand name cat food. Have you ever tried pricing the stuff at the Big Box type of Stores- PetSTuff and Huge Containers Of Pet Food On High Shelves or what ever they call themselves? I shop at these and I save money on food and litter over the supermarket.

not all catfood is good for your cat. Is corn one of the ingredients? Cats can't digest corn, (they are forced carnivores and short intestines means they need to get most nutrients from meat) so it is just pet feed filler. I actually switched to regular Chicken Soup for the Cats Soul food (lowest in carbs for any dry food I could find) and my cats ate less. My fat cat became thin & the other cats seem more active. And it wound up being a lot cheaper than IAMS. If you must switch pet food, mix a little of the new food with a lot of the old the first feeding like 10-90%, the next day a little more 20-80% and so on until you get 100% the new food. But check the ingrediants. Not all pet food is equally good for your cat or tasty. Imagine if your mom decided to feed you beans & liver to save money?

Cheap cat food is just that, cheap. Remember that places like Walmart probably don't rotate their pet food around as much as they should. Check expiration dates. If it's near the date, throw it out. Cats can smell stale food better than we can.
If you have picky cats, only put the food down to feed twice a day. Keep the bowl empty or out of their reach until feeding times only. Eventually, your cat will learn to eat when the food is there. No cat will let itself starve.

Well, cats are preaty smart animals and they won't eat all sorts of food if they don't like it. Most probably your cats got used to the type of food you were giving them, and although it looks the same to you, the other brand is a totally different mix.
With my cat it's much the same. Sometimes it may even be the same brand but different flavors and it will not eat it. Cats have their preferences and don't change them that easy.

If you are feeding him ham and tuna to tempt him into eating, you might have a sick kitty who feels worse with this food in his tummy. If your feeding him ham and tuna as a treat he might just be spoiled. This might also mess up his digestion because it's not very healthy. Either way the best thing to do is take him to the vet and make sure he isn't sick. He could be blocked or have a hairball that is bothering him. So if he can't poo then he isn't going to want to eat. There's no where to put the food. It's very important that he pee too. Sometimes males develop crystals in their urine that can cause a painful blockage and so they would not want to eat. So if he's not eating he won't make poo. Good luck, hope he gets better.

Your cat is a creature of habit. It likes to stay on the same food. I would mix some good food with the cheap food. Then gradually add more cheap food until the cat gets used to the cheaper food.

Figure out other ways to cut expenses...are you eating off brand too? Cat food really isn't that expensive, even for stuff like Purina. To offset the costs just don't drink any soft drinks or cook more meals at home.
Cat's don't like their diets to be changed and it can make their stomachs upset. If it is absolutely necessary to switch to off brand, do it gradually by mixing name brand with off brand until the cat gets use to the cheap food.

If you could smell what it contains as your cat can, you wouldn't eat it either.
I had a little poodle that walked away from most hamburgers. She would only eat two from fast food restaurants.
Had a Great Dane that ate twice as much crap than he did better food. Left most of the crap in the yard as land mines.
Has to tell one something.
