RLS is quite common - some estimates say up to 10% of the general population.
The cause, to be quite honest, is unknown. The main idea is that there is a problem with signalling in the brain by the neurotransmitter dopamine. You can reproduce the symptoms in patients by giving them drugs which block so-called dopamine receptors, for example. However, other systems in the brain have also been implicated... there's research going on, but the picture I'm afraid isn't very clear.

Some research has shown that low Ferritin levels could cause RLS. Check with your doctor to see if he will run this test for you. If you are low, and you bring your level back up, RLS could possibly go away. Although, It also may not be the cause. It is work a check though.
