Depends on how far you've gone and how and when he asks you. You could just take hold of his hand gently and say it in the softest of ways. Normally, questions like "But Why?" will follow, but just tell him your reason still gently but that you would appreciate having him as a friend.
Make sure not to just say it and barge out the door. That hurts even more

No outside help is needed. You help yourself to have the courage of telling him politely at start and if that doesn't serve, be harsh!
