Sudden swelling in one leg is unusual, and there are not many things that can do it. The most likely is a deep vein thrombosis, which requires medical attention, although not necessarily as an emergencty visit during the night.
Less likely are trauma (which it doesn't sound like you had) or a ruptured Baker's cyst which also produces pain and swelling in one leg.
Overall, yes you need to see a doctor within a day.

Is there an emergency doctor or nurse you can call for advice? I understand all your concerns about your 4-year-old and husband, but your health is of the utmost importance. Try calling your doctor's practice — I would expect there to be an answerphone message, giving numbers you can call if you need a doctor out-of-hours. Just speaking to that doctor may put your mind at rest.

i dont think you can have sudden death from a leg edema. i'm not med expert here but still, you should go and have it checked before it gets worse complications. if you have good neighbors who are your friends, may be you can ask them to watch of your kid for a while. if nothing works, elevate your leg and try looking in the web for some answers.
oh yeah, tell your husband about this. its all about honesty. :)

go to the doctor tommorrow and find out, there's no harm done, you'll be fine till morning I'm sure of it.
massage your leg, drink plenty of fluids
the worst case senario (by the sounds of it) is lack of oxygen to the leg.
better consult a doctor rather than wasting your time on the internet, a doctor that can do tests is better than a 17 year old guessing from what she's seen in documentaries
go to a doc tommorrow and don't worry any one or yourself
you'll be fine
(these people are only answering the first part/ title of your question)

according to wikipedia it can be a heart related condition resulting in swelling from blood serum leaking into your fatty tissues. So it may not be an absolute emergency, but you should get in today. even if that means a trip too the emergency room. Good luck.

Sudden oedema may be caused by a couple of things, but one of the things it suggests is a heart attack. If it's very sudden, I'd definitely got to the ER.
It's better to be safe than sorry.

Worst case scenario is you have a clot in your leg, which would result in swelling and pain. If this dislodges it can result in a pulmonary embolism which causes immediate death.
Disclaimer: this is not a diagnosis, just a worst case scenario

Well, the first thing that popped into my head is DVT. I have had several of them. So no, it really shouldn't wait until the AM. Edmea from cardiac problems would be bilateral - meaning both legs.
If you have to wait, please elevate you leg above you heart and if you start to have problems breathing please call an ambulance.
Are you on birth control right now?

when adema happens then go to a doctor immidiately. the doc will run some tests on you and then if they come positive he will take necessary mesures. there are a lot of ways to fight cancer. there is cancer therapy, amputation, medicines a lot of way to fight cancer. you are scared with out a doubt but please think of your child. for her sake go to the doc before its too late. it is easier to cure cancer in its early stages , before it spreds.so, go to the doc and please stop making these silly excuses as sleeping child and husband's office. cause, you are more important than anything else.

I don't know. It depends on the cause of the edema, Sunny. Edema is apparently a symptom of an underlying condition and, depending on what it is, the condition could cause your death.
Read about edema here and you decide:
