For your question, it is basically asking how do these works "show characteristics of " the periods which they were made. You answer should discuss how these works reflect the periods during which they were made, by containing all the various characteristics of a typical work from that time. Go into details about all the characteristics.

that means - how do these works tell something about the time period in which they were make.

A painting may have people dressed differently.or have people riding around in horse and buggy, carrying umbrellas at the beach when that was fashionable..etc.

Books also do the same thing with the content that they present. Some older books will not touch on any modern inventions or they will offer a different set of values that are more common in another time period.

how do these works reflect (show) the periods (timeframe) in which they were made.

For instance a silent film shows or reflects an era in which there was no sound in movies which I beleive was in the early 1900's don't hold me to that. It also shows the type vehicles,homes,cloths, etc. of that time.

The context you are using means "How does the period in which they were made affect these works?" The question wants you to explain why one piece of work is an example of a particular period as opposed to another.

In teaching reflection is used as a term to refer to critical thinking. It's actually hard to define, but I'll copy some parts of one of my assignments I did on reflective teaching, hope it helps;

It (reflection) involves the relationship between an individual’s thought and action and the relationship between an individual teacher and his or her membership in a larger collective called society (subjective meanings in teachers’ heads). The second relationship explores consciously the relationship between individual teaching actions and the purposes of education in society.

According to Dewey who is the father of this term;

Reflection: disciplined, conscious, explicit and critical thought which contributes to the intellectual and moral development of the person. Active, persistent, and careful consideration of any belief or supposed form of knowledge in the light of the grounds that support it, and the further conclusions to which it tends. To Dewey, reflection contributes to personal growth because it frees us from a single view of the situation which would restrict how we define problems and so the resulting solutions.

The process of reflection involves;

Feeling “something is wrong”
observing the difficulty
suggestions/solutions
thinking on the implication of each suggestion/solution
re-observing the difficulty with the suggestions/solutions in mind.

Reflection in general is the process of evaluating the world critically. You can apply it to anything.

Some early Australian art reflects the attitudes of pioneers towards the Aborigines by depicting them as elongated monkeys.

It really depends on the context you want to use the word.

With regards to the example of your sentence, reflect basically means showing, or giving insight to. (Ie these works give insight to the periods which they were made).

I hope this helps, I can't really think of another way to describe this.
