I would suggest that you go down to your local animal shelter & visit with the orphaned cats. I'm sure you will find one that you connect with. That is how I got my first cat - she was a runt, grey & white & a bit smaller than the others. She's 16 now & just as sweet as she was the day I got her. She's still only about 6 lbs.The other good thing about animal shelter cats is that they usually come with a free vet visit certificate & coupons for vaccinations & spaying / neutering.

I have a calico cat. Her name is Cloey. She is an indoor pet. One day we let her go outside to get some fresh air. No one was paying much attention to her at that time. A while later my mom went to go look for her. After looking for a while my mom looked out on the street. The cat was on the side of the road and had recently been hit by a car. The cat was alive though. We took her [the cat] to the vet. They took an X-ray and found out that a leg was broken. The vet put a splint (cast) on the broken leg. The doctor said the cast will have to be on for about 5 to 6 weeks. About 4 or 5 weeks later, The cat took her own cast off of her leg. Its been about 2 weeks since that so the leg is almost completely healed.

If this is your first cat/kitten...short haired require less upkeep. We have always gotten ours from the local Humane Society.

The more purebred the animal, the more hyper it is going to be. Female kittens are easier to maintain than males as they get older.

Make sure you get it from a responsible breeder, shelter, vet. Get it spayed/neutered as soon as the shelter will do it. That's generally 12 weeks old and 3 pounds in weight unless you get it from a shelter that automatically fixes the animals when they arrive.

The more affection you give a cat, the more affection it will give you. We have always given just dry food and leave it out all the time. That way if we need to go away for a couple of days, the animal will be fine.

long haired cats have more noticable shedding and you will find hair on everything unless you brush your cat daily, so keep in mind long haired cats are more work.

Ragdolls are automatic cuddlers. They automatically go limp & start purring when you pick them up. Unfortunately they are long haired and large, so they are a heavy cat.

Siamese are smart, vocal (they talk a lot) have loyaty like a dog, are easy to train and will hate most of your friends. Most do not like strangers.

Rex seldom shed and are good for people with alergies.

Turkish Vans like water and will even swim in your swimming pool if there is not much chlorine in it.

If you are not looking for a specific breed, get a kitten or go to your local shelter. Look for a cat that comes to you and wants to be petted through the cage and purrs. Ask to hold the cat and what shots it has had.

I know someone who breeds pedigree cats and has several different kinds. I find the friendliest ones are a breed called 'burmese' and you can get them in all sorts of colours - bluey grey, red, cream, chocolate, chocolate torti (a mix of chocolate and cream) and i think black, but they don't have any of those. They have short hair and are easy to look after and they are very affectionate. They love to play and they will follow you round the house and are very loyal. My favourite colours are red and bluey grey (look them up on the internet). Otherwise you could just get a kitten from the pet rescue centre and give one of them a good home no matter what sort it is. Good luck and enjoy your new kitty.

Try the pound, or one of the "free kittens" often they make the best pets.

Kittens are good because you can train them.

All cats have a unique personality -- In my experience, Siamese are very tempermental.

Calicos are usually pretty good.

Have fun! (and good luck litter training!)

I suggest going to a cat rescue centre and adopting one that way. Give a lonely cat some love...

First get a kitten not a cat. go to a pet store or shelter and pick the one that picks you. Kittens are very finnicky if you fall in love with one that ignores you in the store he/she will ignore you at home.
