Religion has caused some bad things to happen. It has also caused some good things to happen. Communism (Marxist atheism) resulted in one of the bloodiest revolutions and nations in the history of the world. So maybe it's just anything that humans touch gets corrupted rather than just pointing an arrogant and disapproving finger at religion. Every person on this earth has a belief system. The more people that get together and agree on one, and the more emotional they are about that belief system, the more corrupt it will be regardless of whether or not religion is involved.

Religion itself isn't bad, it's the followers who cannot see what is useful, and what isn't. It's the zealots that give it the bad name. It's the people who force their religion on others, or try to get laws passed based off of their religious ideals that others may not share.

Religion has shaped society from the first moment a cave man saw something he didn't understand, and they began creating Gods to explain it. Gods and Goddesses have been around since the dawn of time to explain things that people could not yet understand and explain. THAT'S what people fail to realize. Gods, no matter which one, are man created. They're created by people who can't understand something, so they create a magical explanation.

Religion keeps people in order, for better or for worse. That's another reason it was created and used. It's good because it scares people into being good and not killing each other, but bad because it gives some people a way to justify taking the rights of others away or forcing their beliefs on others. Religion is a scare tactic to keep the masses from anarchy, and I have to say, I AM glad for that.

However, religion is slowly becoming a bad thing, with some religions worse than others. I recently read an article someone posted on gaiaonline.com in the Extended Discussion that 98% of Americans believe in God and Creationism. That's a stark contrast with the rest of the modern world, where I believe it was something like 76% believe in evolution. Religion is a BAD thing for Americans, because it will be our downfall. It's keeping good sound science out of classrooms, and holding back science all because someone feels their PERSONAL morals are being violated. It's total BS.

America will fall far behind the rest of the world if we keep this blind faith up. So, yes, for AMERICA, religion is bad because people here follow it so blindly that they can't see logic and truth.

The purpose of religion I see as a group of people who are sharing same belief and doing things (dogma) to make them feel better afterlife.
Nothing else.
Therefore, you have to have the belief which can be shared by certain religion.
Good or bad?
To be rational, I don't see the purpose of having religion in my life. It is an uncivilized activities in human society nowadays.
Nowadays, government uses religion as personal belief.
you don't need to have religion in order to live in this world.
My belief is only for science.
Science is an universal language. I don't understand why people would like to make thing complicated.

stocketrader24,
"Is religion a bad thing.?"
It sure can be! Religion as a word, is something that I don't like. It means to me something that takes away from the real relationship that a person can have with God. Religion to me sounds like a bunch of rules and using idols like Catholics do.

So in one sense of the word, I hate religion. It teaches people wrong things.

As Moses, and Abraham, and David talked to God, so can anyone with the faith. You might not see burning bushes, but He does respond, that's a fact!

As with many things, when the user uses the item as its creator intended, it can do a lot of good. So if you use religion as a tool to justify bad behaviour, then it's your fault, not God's.

I think religion is a wonderful thing. I'm glad to have one to guide myself through this mess of a life we have.

Do you really mean religion? or spirituality?

For me spirituality is the connection to the Force, the All, the Creator, God, Goddess....whatever name you want to give it. Religion is simply the traditions, sacraments and practices that help us to forge that connection and maintain it.

Is that a bad thing? Sometimes.

Religion is like any other tool.

Used with good intent - it's a good thing. Used with bad intent - it's a bad thing.

Only if it is taken to the extreme on either end. you can have your totally psycho religious fanatics who force everything on others and who are only hurting there own cause. At the other end of the spectrum, there is the complete atheists who are so intense about things 'destroying' their kids- you know, like having to say 'one nation under god' or that we have 'in god we trust' on our money. if people choose to follow any given religion thats fine, until you sway too far either way.

It depends on who you talk to. I think Jews think Muslims are Bad, Muslims think Christians are bad, and Christians think Jews and Muslims are bad. The Unitarians think everyone is good. Come to think of it, I think Jews, Christians,.and Muslims don't like each other at all. So if you look at it that way, yes, it is a bad thing.
