The word gay means happy and carefree. The word has been co-opted and corrupted to put a positive spin on pathological and perverse behavior.

The word gay is usually used interchangably with the word homosexual. People don't seem to distinguish between the two (although if one looks back in what was written in the not so distant past....20th Century....)the word gay was at some point used to distinguish between those socialized with each other and formed the "gay" community versus those who just had the homosexual inclinations but may not necessarily have acted upon them. Today, in usage, the words are used interchangably, thus causing great confusion. Not to mention that words like queer are used by the gay community and this word, like many others, is often used interchangably with gay and homosexual. This of course causes confusion with other groups in society that also identify as queer but are neither gay or homosexual.
I generally prefer the word gay, but others refer to me as homosexual, etc, as well. That is why I say that words are used interchangably. I use the word gay, others use the word homosexual or queer and use it in the manner that the words are simply interchangable in meaning.
As for this idea of the "gay" lifestyle, I'm still not sure what that is. My lifestyle centers around my religious and spiritual beliefs which is Hinduism. I am sure that there might be people who may fit into some sort of "category" for whatever the term "gay lifestyle" is supposed to mean (as I have heard it described), yet it doesn't fit me. So by most of these people I am not a homosexual/gay because I do not embrace the "lifestyle" and yet I am still romantically and sexually attracted to the same gender and am involved in a loving relationship. And as far as I can tell I am not in the minority here. Most of the "gay lifestyle" that is often stated is actually a small subsect lifestyle of society itself and I have met homo and hetero people who fit into the descriptions that I have read from various sources about their defination of "gay lifestyle".
Still, thankfully you clarified the idea that "gay" would mean someone pursuing their rights and "homosexual" as one that is celibate. Perhaps people could come up with other terms to be even more clear when they speak. Although generally speaking when someone says that they are a Christian and gay I automatically assume they are celibate until they tell me otherwise. Again that is because I know what the majority Christian lifestyle teaches (having lots of Christian friends helps, as does having friends from other religions, too).
Great question, though. As I said, I think, based on some articles, etc, that I have read in the past that the words did used to be used, atleast by the media, as being distinct in meaning (although I am not sure if homosexual was used to represent a celibate population or just those who weren't out, the articles were unclear about that aspect)
Peace be with you.

Arnel,
I use the terms synonymusly. I use them as if they mean the same thing. Some people want you to write; Gay & Lesbian, but I don't like to go to the trouble in most situations.

Personally, I prefer homosexual as the collective term, but gay/lesbian or simply gay works.

Gay used to mean happy. We're talking semantics here. Some people are expressive in their beliefs, others, not so much. And some wish they weren't. What's your point here?

I favor the term "exosexual" (exotically sexual). Can reference male and female homosexuals.
