i am not asking this because i am an atheist. i am not an atheist. if you are an atheist, this question obviously doesnt apply to you, but you can still comment about why you think others believe in god. i am just curious to see about the origins of peoples faiths.

try not to tailor words to a specific religion. we arent talking about why you believe in religion, we are talking about why you believe in GOD. why would you believe in god even if nobody had any idea what christianity was, or judaism, or islam. dont mention the words bible, koran, jesus, or mohammed.

EDIT: atheists can stop answering now. their answers are boring and rote. unless you can come up without some generalized and with something more personal and thoughtful, please just don't bother typing.

Science can neither confirm nor deny whether there is a god. God cannot be tested in an experiment. I heard an Agnostic say once "God is not rational, it cannot be explained by the rational mind. God is experitial. You can only experience God, whatever it is, and the experience varies from person to person."

I'd have to agree with this person statement. For me I believe in God because I experience God. Now of course the English word God is rather vague. As a Hindu my defination of the word God probably varies from, say, a Christain's defination. And I agree that everyone experiences God differently (and coincidently my religion teaches this point actually). The rational mind, which is the basis of science, does not experience things, it gathers facts based upon observations within a tested enviroment and then if it can all be reproduced over and over again with the same results...then the hypothesis is considered "proven." The spiritual/religious aspect of humanity isn't based in the rational mind, it is purely in experience. And since everyone has different experiences and because an experience can vary from test to test, and the mere fact that the rational mind cannot truly test these experiences and come to any positive conclusion as to whether there is or is not a god, well, then it becomes clear that science doesn't contradict god because it never deals with the concept of god and cannot prove or disprove god.

It's like you are telling someone about a dream you had. You experience the dream, you see all the vivid images and feel all the emotions. Science can hook you up to machines that indicate when you are dreaming and what your brain patterns might be, but the scientist can't experience the dream with you, they can't feel what you feel or see what you see, etc. Only you can do that. That's how the experience of God is like.

(And for the record that "dream" analogy is also from an Agnostic author, whose name escapes me at the moment. It isn't exactly worded the same, but the same point is made).

For the record, I'm not an Agnostic or Atheist. I'm a Hindu.

Peace be with you.

I believe in God for a few reasons, and I don't believe a belief in God does contradict science. The example often used to "prove" that science and God conflict is evolution, but even if evolution is true, who's to say that God didn't guide evolution as a means to his creation? There are many people who feel quite the opposite that science actually shows Gods existence. I studied science and a lot of math in college and I was always struck by how perfect it all is -- for example how a formula can work so well for so many different types of problems.

Another reason to believe in God is the fact that most people throughout history have had some concept of God and spirituality. I respect the wisdom that the great thinkers from all over the world had, and I think that their belief in man's spirituality is something we can't discount.

"why do you believe in god, even though science seems to contradict god?" -- because I have a son. And because science so far is only proving the existence of GOD - not disproving it. Look at the detail in everything around you. The sheer size - both small and large - of the things GOD made.
GOD gave us free will - so of course we question everything - as well we better, but there is too much proof - of course this leads to another question.
And you asked it. These human system you refer to are not GOD. GOD is GOD and has an individual purpose for us all. Humans formed these groups - Humans rewrote the laws, what basically countless times to suit who was in charge. (You live longer NOT pissing on the meanest dog of the pack.) See for a long time humans were pack animals, now 2000+ yrs later we haven't changed but we cover the mess with distractions.
Individually humans are wonderful, don't get me started on the groups humans have been, and are in now. PU something stinks.
Good solid logical question. Keep asking them! (not that I can answer them correctly ....)

1) You are lost in a forest, there you see a house in the middle of the forest. you are certain that this house has been built by someone. you may not know who he is but you are dead sure that the house has a owner. WHY?

2)You dont see Infra-Red radiations, yet you believe its existence. you dont see the waves that are meitted while we talk, yet you can feel it. you have not seen a single galaxy yet you believe the presence of millions of galaxies. WHY?

3) You were not present when an Apple fell over Newton. And he discovered Gravity. yet you believe Newton discovered 'Gravity'. have you seen it? Yet you believe in the phenomenon called 'Gravity'.

4) Nobody knows where is the exact location of 'Mind' and the 'Soul' in the human body, yet millions accept its prescence.

If you can affirm all these without seeing them, Can not the whole of the universe be built by ALmighty GOD???

The house in the forest has to have an owner, The Gigantic universe running in precise equilibrium, without an Owner?

GOD exists and HE is only ONE.

So science still contradicts GOD??? GOD made Science, not the vice-versa. Read about one such Book sent by GOD which is 100% compatible with established science facts (remember it was sent 1400 years before)

Where did we come from? Why are we here? These are the basic question that have lead humans to form religious belief, which are attempts to find meaning in life.

People today have confused religion and science because science explains some religious ideas in different ways but science works in a completely different way. It attempts to tell us how things came to be. Religion attempts to explain why things came to be.

If you ask a bank robber how he robbed the bank, its a completely different answer to why he robbed the bank. I believe why is the more human answer, the more interesting.

Evolution may well be how man came to be in his present form but it does not suggest what I should be doing with my life. How does not contradict why. How is pretty boring, pretty much yesterday, I want to know about tomorrow. Give me God any day.

You say that science seems to contradict God, but you don't supply any facts, articles or quotes. As a matter of interest, science appears to confirm the existence of God. Even Einstein said that the universe was far to ordered to be accidental and that there had top be a Supreme Being behind it all. God Bless!

jewishgirl87,
"why do you believe in god, even though science seems to contradict god?"
Science has not been able to contradict God. A scientist that I spoke to denies that science has no study on God, and therefore no buisness entering the debate.

Why so I believe in God?
Do you want the bottom line? Because He gave me the ability to believe in Him. Not everyone has that. God does not give the ability to believe in Him. Here's a quote from the Bible:
2 Thessalonians 3:2 And that we may be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men: for all men have not faith.

I hope your dad has faith someday.

I believe in God and in science. In my mind at least there is no contradiction between the two. For example, on creationism and evolution: who says that evolution and the concept of God cannot coexist? Why is it impossible to believe that God created life from one source and guided it on a path of evolution?
The concept of God and science do not cancel each other out. It shoud be said that now that we know even more about the world around us and our universe, we should be even more struck with awe by God's creation. There is nothing in Religion that claims science to be a lie and there is nothing in science that claims there is no God.

Who says science is correct? I've heard intelligent people poke holes in the carbon dating technique that most scientists would swear by. Science is all about hypothesis, theory, etc. What if, what if, what if...what if God is real? To even think that the creation I see everyday, the complexity of the human inner workings, the solar system was all created by a huge explosion is just senseless.

God is creation - creation is science.

Now using Creation as the operative word - I see with my eyes that something made what I see (creation/science).

I am not going to rave on, but I have always believed in God and I really dont know how, why or when. I just know within my heart that there is a God.
