I have a couple of files that I need to access(read/write) from two different machines. Is there any good method (or software) to help with this situation so that I don't need to worry about the version of the accessed files?

try installing on the both machines an ftp software. the internet is full with this software. try www.download.com and search for ftp.

the ftp servers offer anonymous access and/or user-level with password acecss. it depends on you the rights you give to all users. you can create as many users you want.. you can allow them to read, modify, write, erase, execute..... you can offer each user a folder where to start, you can add more folders, you can lock them in those folders [they will not be able to go up one level] etc. you will find mre about that in the program`s documentation

after that you can access both of the computers using a ftp client. you can also use windows. hust type ftp://192.168.10.5 or what is that computer`s ip in the network and you will be prompted for log-in. you will then have the rights the user with which you logged in has.

Best thing for you to do is just have the same version of software installed in both computers. Why bother with a 3rd party program, that you myte have to pay for and myte also not work to your expectations. And also get a portable usb harddrive to transfer the files back and fourth.
