I don't know how long till everyone is locked up but I do know the prison industry is worth billions. Like any other industry there has to be growth. The only way to have growth is more prisoners.
Other countries also put more into rehabilitation and services to help ex cons readjust to society. We don't. We actually prefer they commit more crimes so there are more prison dollars.

A big part of the problem is the fact that our punishments are not strict enough. One of the biggest problems is recitivism. Jail is just not enough of a deterrent. We got rid of the chain gangs, put in color cable or satellite television and a weight room. Many gangs have members that are low on the rung because they HAVEN'T been to jail. Many gangs to more work IN jail.
If we return punishment to the consequence of committing a crime, then perhaps people will straighten up. We have many "corrections" facilities but it doesn't seem like they are correcting any behavior.
Racism and the victim mentality do not help either. They tend to perpetuate the problem.
Another problem is the statistic itself. Sure it sounds bad, but what is it really saying? According to my math and your numbers, the population of the United States is 283,700,000. That' pretty close. I found an official report that put it at: 295,734,134. I also found a source that puts the prison population around 1.47 million, and another that puts it at 2.03 million.
That is a lot of numbers, but what do they mean? It is still less than 1% of the population. It's somewhere in the neighborhood of .77% Not even a whole person per 100 people. So that's the numbers, what about the real question you asked: What's our secret?
Well take into consideration your comparing plane ol' numbers. Did you take into consideration the laws? Is it possible that our judicial systme maybe more efficient at catching criminals? Maybe we are more likely to lock someone up for a less serious crime than other countries.
Without doing an indepth study of the laws and judicial systems of other countries and cultures, comparing just the numbers is actually quite irresponsible. If I were you I would not concern myself with such issues until someone does a complete study.

There are several reasons:
* The three strikes and you are out law
* Religion servered as a vessel to contain a lot of stuff. But religion in some ways is loosing ground and is not as attractive as it was. The problem is that nothing has stepped in to replace it.
* America needs to work on reducing peverty levels and increase education. Also decrease racisim.
* It would help decrease the numbers if the US legalized MJ

Many are incarcerated on drug charges...We devote way too much money and resources going after the wrong kinds of crimes....ie: drugs..prostitution, etc. We probably also have the highest murder rate (just a guess). I'm not into drugs or prostitution myself but I think our money would be better spent if the criminals (other than drug users and prostitutes) were concentrated on more.

If too many people are locked up, there probably are too many laws! Especially ones that curtail personal freedoms.
If California decided that medical marijuana should be allowed, why do the feds interfere?
