If you are at a party, the best question you can ask a person you don't know is: " So, how do you know [the host of the party] ? "
" What sort of work do you do? "... " what do you think of the party so far? ", on occasion a simple statement can sometimes work as a conversation. Possibly refer to something fairly neutral in the news perhaps, " Did you hear that [band name] is coming to town? "...

this is funny, but i used it once. i was in a bar, but you could use it anywhere, really. so, i saw this hot guy across the way and i decided to go over but i had no clue what to say to him. thank god it was a long walk across the bar, otherwise i still probably would not have thought of anything. so, when i got over there, i came up from behond him and tapped him on the shoulder. when he looked at me, i said, "oh, ok.....i just came over to see if you were as hot up close as your were from across the room." worked like a charm. we never ran out of things to talk about all night. too bad i was on vacation in a different town, otherwise, this might have gone somewhere....

Just ask people how they're doing, talk about new movies that you saw and ask them if they have seen any of them and whether or not they liked them. Also, the weather is always something people talk about to not feel so tense. Also, sports, hobbies, and what's on TV. Good luck.
