In the beginning Adam and Eve walked in the garden and talked face to face with God and they knew beyond a shadow of doubt that he existed. He sent his messengers down from time to time to teach them. Later some of their children did not believe them and that is when apostasy set in. Spiritual conviction as a means of worship is a personal choice and God will never force us to worship and obey him.

If by Religion you mean the church, then it was God inspired. In the bible the church is the bride of Christ. In any organized religion it is difficult to stay true to the word of God, some try more than others. If you want to learn about God and don't like the idea of "religion" just pick up a bible and read. If that's not enough contact a church or talk to friends and find a small in-home bible study (you don't have to be a member of the church to attend most bible studies) and study the bible with a small group of other people who want to learn about the bible. I think it is a much better way to begin to understand God than sitting in a church listening to general teachings. Church is a very good place for worship, singing, celebrating and glorifying god. I tend to think reading on your own as meat, the home bible study as potatoes and church is more like dessert. It's nice but not completely necessary.
I'm sure somebody will find this offensive, but the bible doesn't command that you attend church, you are to have fellowship with other Christians but not specifically attend Church. If somebody can find a scripture that proves me wrong, I'll stand corrected.

James 1:27 Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world. If only we had the real kind of religion. If you mean doctrine then here is the principle, you can have good and bad math, you can have good and bad science (not good in moral terms but in accurately handleing the data involved) likewise you can have good and bad theology. If you are talking about manmade rituals that are meant to please God, rules and regulations then you have never considered the things Jesus actually taught. Your question is hard to answer because your definition of religion is probably different than the one I gave. And also what does preach God mean. Probably the best answer is that Jesus told his followers to love one another and to grow spiritually, individually and as a group. Making disciples of all nations. Church was a title applied later.

God commanded His prophets and messengers to tell people about their Creator and the religion (which means way of life) He choose for them to follow. Although some religions are made up by man.. there are religions which are all pre-historic forms of Islam, that God designed for people as His chosen way of life. The current religion and final religion (way of life) God will accept is Islam. Islam is the perfect way of life when practiced in accordance to the teachings of the Holy Prophet. Islam is not exemplified by terroristic violent people. You must look at the Sufi people to get a true picture of Islam.

As opposed to choosing what to preach God? Hedonism? Charades? I think the religion part just kinda' falls in line with preaching God.

The Christian God chose prophets to tell people about Him. The record of this through the years was gathered together into the Old Testament (in the Bible).
The disciples and apostles of Jesus Christ spoke and wrote letters and books which recorded the life and teachings of Jesus Christ -- which were compiled into the New Testament.
Cordially,
John

Leaders used religion to establish, increase, and maintain their authority. From the creation stories all over the world to the latest three manifestations of mass hysteria (Judaism, Christianity, Islam) religion is a tool of manipulation to keep everyone gullible and in line.
