The army had already begun the switch over by 1965, but didn't get large numbers of the weapon until 1967. The marines switched over years later, depended on the unit on what weapon they were armed with. Marine snipers continued to use modified M14s until very recently. Some may still use them today.

The Marine Corps began the switchover to the M16A1 in 1967, during the Khe Sanh hill fights. The Marines fighting the North Vietnamese in that area were among the first Marines to be issued the weapon, although many Marines held onto their M14's throughout '67-'68. If you look up pictures of Marines preparing to evacuate the Saigon Embassy in 1975, you can see a Marine equipped with an M14 rifle.
