Sorry, but I believe in God, but do not believe in Satan. To believe in Satan is to believe that there is some war for souls that God could possibly not win. Not possible.
I do believe that there is good and bad, and positive and negative and that without the bad or negative, we cannot know the good or the positive, but I simply do not believe in an evil entity called Satan. In the same vein, I also do not believe in God as an entity or the ever popular image of the old guy with the long white beard and robes in a throne in the sky. I believe that God is the process of life itself.
The source energy and creator of all life, formless and genderless.
Everywhere, eternally.

Mother God can do what she likes and she does like to exist without Satan. She is an infinite divine eternal one. Maybe those of you who believe in Satan project the truth about the discovery of a material world divided by a primal conflict between predator and prey into your imaginations as the myth about the mystery of a spiritual world divided by a conflict between a good one in Heaven and an evil one cast down to and ruling over Earth. It may seem some times like Satan rules the Earth. This is only because we live in a body consuming biosphere divided by a primal conflict between predator and prey and successful predators have traditionally portrayed sacrificed prey as being 'evil' and the out come of the game of survival and sacrifice as 'the will of a good one in Heaven'.

That's absurd. That's like saying there has to be war in one area of the world in order for there to be peace in another. Is that true? Must half of us suffer in order for the rest of us to be happy? No, there can be good without there being evil. Just because many things have an equal opposite doesn't mean everything does. What's the opposite of our eyes? Must there be an opposite? If there is no opposite of our eyes then does that mean our eyes don't exist? No, because they definitely do. Life is not some cosmic math equation that must constantly be in balance. It's completely logical to believe in God without believing in Satan.

In ancient Jewish tradition Satan is simply an angel doing the work that God assigned to Satan to do.
The word Satan means challenger. With the idea of Satan challenging us, or tempting if you will. This description sees Satan as the angel who is the embodiment of man's challenges. This idea of Satan works closely with God as an integral part of God plan for us. His job is to make choosing good over evil enough of a challenge so that it becomes clear to us that there can be only one meaningful or logical choice.
Contrast this to Christianity, which sees Satan as God's opponent. In Jewish thought, the idea that there exists anything capable of setting itself up as God's opponent would be considered polytheistic or setting up the devil to be an equally powerful polarity to god or a demigod.
Oddly, proof for The Christian satan/devil mythology is supposedly found in the ancient Jewish texts that were borrowed to create the bible. One can’t help but wonder how Christians came up with such a fantastically different interpretation of Gods assistant Satan in their theology.
Other hints about Satan’s role in human relations can be seen if you look at the name Lucifer. It meaning in the original tongue translates as Light bearer or light bringer. Essentially the bringer of enlightenment. The temptations of the Satan idea bring all of us eventually into Gods light. Hardly the Evil entity of Christian mythology.

Don't try to mix philosophy with faith.
The error in your thinking is that God will put the Devil and his angels in the pit of hell. So that He will create a world without sin or the devil.
I am kind of a simple guy, I have trouble trying to answer the question HOW MANY ANGELS CAN DANCE ON THE HEAD OF A PIN

Consider this. If God exists and is an infinitely good entity, where is the requirement that there be something infinitely evil? For good to be a discernable quality, all that is required is for there to be something not good. "Not good" does not equal evil. Evil is not just the privation of good; it is a positive quality in itself. The privation of good would be something comparable to "morally insignificant". Is there a "not good" entity, or an entity with a lesser degree of goodness than God? Of course. Look at people and their actions. People embody recognizably different degrees of goodness. This is all that is required for God to be a meaningful idea.

Yes, because Satan is a fallen angel and so therefore God predates Satan. As far as bad balancing out good, yes, you're right about that. There's enough human satans walking around right now (and don't forget, the devil can be pretty charming, right?) that the main guy gone wouldn't make too huge a dent in the nasty factor in this world.

yes there can and was and will be again God with out satan! Now the distinction your making is Good and evil, and yes Gods Holiness is made more manifest because we have the other end of the scale making a distinction! But that don't affect whether he would exist or not!

I'll warn you, I am an atheist. But I study religion a lot and I come from a strong Catholic background.
What you're talking about is a much more balanced world view than many people posess. It's actually very typical of MANY other cultures outside our own. We're taught, in OUR culture, that Good always wins, Good always prevails, and that Good should completely squash out and destroy evil. Whereas, many Native American tribes, for example, believe in a much more balanced world-- one where you try to avoid getting caught up in evil itself, but you acknowledge its existence and merely step lightly around it. There are good spirits and bad spirits. You can't kill the bad ones. You can only resist getting caught up in them.
Our culture's view on good vs. evil is actually pretty unique; many other cultures are much more accepting of the existence of evil as something that's unavoidable.
I see it this way: If you don't permit the evil to exist, you YOURSELF become the evil. If you killed all the evil people in the world in the name of good, you'd still be killing. The evil people would be gone, but you'd become evil yourself. It's a balance not to be disturbed.

The God of the Christian and Jewish religion knows duality. as it always refers to its self in the plural. So I would say that God can exist without Satan. but Satan cannot exist without God that made its soul like ours from its own body before the creation of the physical universe.
