In the course that I did we were given many stratagies of ettling new chuildren into the srvice.

We are encouraged to have a "settling in period" where the parents bring the child in for short periods of time before their starting date and the parents will actually stay with them, giving the child a chance to become familiar with the carers and the new surroundings and still feel safe in the presence of their parents. Perhaps this could be an option for the child?

Offer the child plenty of support, lots of cuddles etc. If you can try and find out why the child is so upset as you may be able to attend to these needs.

Talk to the parents and try and find an interest of the child's that can be used in an arival routine, such as reading a favourite book or a favourite activity.

Hello,
I am also a preschool teacher and the first week of school is a tough one. Some children adjust very quickly but with others... I'm sure you know. Usually, I have my assistant keep the other children busy so that I can give my attention to the crying child. I try my best to find something that will get their attention or when the child is not consolable I give them a little space but stay close by and go about my schedule. They will usually come around once they get tired or see the others having fun. Sometimes the other children will get the attention of the child, they respond to their peers, and that helps. Then I will let the parent know and tell them to give them a picture of whatever it is that they are missing, mommy, daddy, grandma, and allow the child to keep it in their pocket.

Talk to the parent and check that everything is all right at home. Suggest they bring something small from home they can keep in a pocket. Draw a little time table with each hour marked on and he can Cross them off and know how long it is until home time. Give him/her lots of hugs and see if you can get the other children to help him

Find out the reasons for his crying. Subsequently try to address his needs if those are within your control. Never slap or scold the child. Consider the crying child is yours.
